Been in the Denver Area. Something I noticed about dating here.

I noticed that the interracial dating scene here in Denver/Boulder/Fort Collins is very progressive here. I saw several black male / white women interracial couples and saw a few other interracial couple pairing while in each city.

It also seems that people here are more comfortable with themselves. When I initially came here I thought people here would be liberal of course but a bit pretentious about it. I didn't get that impression from here yet having talked to people here.

I didn't see a strong Indian or Asian presence there but I wouldn't imagine them having any problem or fitting in.

As some of you may know, I live in Texas and you have to understand some areas of Texas have a certain mindset, especially a more closed mindset when it comes to interracial dating.

I've been considering Austin TX which is seen as a 'progressive' city, but as some people have said on the Texas forum many of them preach that, but there is still a bit of racial discomfort between different races of people there. Many say you only feel that edgy progressive vibe if you're white. I wouldn't say I've gotten a lot of that but I can see where they are coming from in some of my experiences being there.

All in all I wanted to say that about Denver.

Yeah. Some places are liberal in terms of race relations (New York, California, Florida) -- and other places are pseudo liberal. I've heard Seattle is like that. It's supposed to be this super liberal, Starbucks drinking hipster city but interracial relationships (or lack thereof) tell a different story. Of course I've never been so I can't say with certainty. I never really thought of Denver as anything more than a stoner city. I suppose since it passed the weed thing, it's pretty liberal, but again, never been so can't say for sure.

Unfortunately, racial integration and minority population are things non whites have to consider when moving somewhere. Glad to see Denver is forward thinking.

Boulder is more liberal in terms of hippie type stuff. I thought I'd see more of that in Denver. Ski bunnies, snow bums, whatever you may call them.

But no, downtown Denver had a lot of educated women that were well dressed. You see the guys that are the 'stoner' types too, but I think I'd stand out being a preppy black guy :) And there's a lot of white women there who will date outside their race without it being some sort of fetish BS. The black men I saw many they were with were the educated types.

I feel in Austin it is that pseudo-liberal you speak of. It's crazy and wild. Keep Austin Weird rah rah, but it's still in the middle of Texas. Obnoxiously hipster and still have hang ups about race. Not ALL of them, but I definitely got that.

This makes me strongly want to consider moving here honestly for me and my needs. Also the type of industry I'm in, it's up my alley. I was considering Austin, but I think Denver is close to what I want.

One thing I was bothered about though is that there seems to be some issues they have with Mexicans moving to Denver. Not sure if the race relations between Mexicans and other groups are good. I have a buddy that is Mexican up there that does well for himself.

People actually take notice of interracial relationships?

Having been born and raised in the South, yes.

I've lived many places though.

I can believe that. I am from Chicago and traveled to Denver with an Ex who's from Denver. We were also going to a big conference.

Her old white father actually said to me, "What happens at these kind of conferences stays that this kind of conference".

While in Chicago the progressive young people around us on a daily basis were 1/2 unable to deal with the idea of an interracial relationship.

I've lived the majority of my life in the south, mostly in Louisiana and Mississippi, so interracial dating has not been as prevalent.

Last March I had to go to Detroit for work and a friend and I spent an evening in a sports bar there. The interracial social demographic there was mind blowing. In this one venue, in one night, there several interracial couples and groups of friends. There was a table with 2 black women and 2 white men. There was a white man at the bar trying to pick up the hot black female bartender. There was a group of men that was white, black, and middle eastern. The place was packed and there was no staring or sideways glances at any of the interracial mixing. It was like culture shock for me, but I loved it and could've stayed in there all night soaking up the scene.

I am half black and half asian and currently in my first serious relationship with a white man from Colorado. We have been discussing moving there next year sometime as we'd both like to leave the south. It is good to know that interracial couples are more common there.

I've heard similar regarding Portland, Or. Liberal mystique, but glaringly one of the most white, least diverse larger cities in the country. And from what I've seen, segregated like so many other cities.

I get the impression that liberalism in Portland anyway, is a manufactured impression, but when it comes to acceptance of the human element of being progressive, well, that's more suspect.

I grew up in Seattle. There were a lot of East Asian-White interracial couples but that was about as far as that went. To some extent I'd say that's the result of Indian people mostly being recent immigrants and there being very few Black or Hispanic people in that part of the country.

Though there was/is a lot of other pseudo liberal bs going on there. Really taking the worst of both worlds on a lot of things.

I never lived in Portland but I visited often. Like Archaxis was saying its mostly a bunch of white hipsters all being weird in the same way. Its like they want to look different and "progressive" but don't want to actually put any effort into it as individuals. Its a shame really because Portland would be great city without them.

I lived in Portland for five years and I can attest to that. "Keep Portland Weird", right? So long as you are their specific brand of weird. Dating in Portland was pretty much impossible for me as I wasn't on the hipster bus. I hated it. It's so utterly close minded and pretentious there. You could probably do fine there as a black guy... so long as you were a black hipster.

My brother lives in Denver, and it's more middle ground there. Fairly progressive, especially with the younger crowd. They have the hipster plague there too, but most of the downtown crowd are young, upwardly mobile types. The burbs are more traditional, conservative types.

Sounds like Austin too. I stick out like a sore thumb too being more of an east coast prep kind of guy. Not a black hipster.

Seems pretentious as hell. I appreciate your feedback.

You're too "mainstream" if you don't sell out on your identity and become a PBR drinking hipster. Oh wait that doesn't make any sense does it...

You're screwed if Austin is like Portland.

Ha that's funny.

Austin has an influx of Californians here though, but yes LARGE hipster population. Tattoos, skinny jeans, etc. so my preppy ass looks out of place :)

When I was working in Louisiana, I heard a story about a judge who would not marry an inter-racial couple because he was concerned for the well being of the kid they might have together.

^^^Yep. It's true. Really happened. Growing up there were quite a few white women with black men in my area, but seeing a white man with a black or mixed black woman was almost unheard of. Hispanic or Asian women, every now and then. It surprised me when I began OLD the overwhelming number of messages I got from white men. It just didn't happen in the real world for me, but I guess it makes it easier to approach someone online.

Well, I understood that Seattle, Denver/Boulder, and Austin had more men than women...

Its probably true that white women tend to prefer other white or light skinned men, so what you might be seeing in those cities is the outcome of those women getting their pick... and the best looking women of any ethnicity also getting their pick.

Still, the pairings I saw. Both the man and woman were attractive. It wasn't like there was a scarcity of men for them to choose from. Even so, they don't have to date black men.

Yes it really is more liberal about that than most places. I can't imagine why. Chicago on the other hand, very segregated and an interracial pair here needs to be able to stand up to ignorance. Looking at Chicago's international and cosmopolitan reputation one would think it would be the reverse. Nope.

That's funny. A lot of cities like that I'm scratching off my list :)

I lived in Atlanta. Large gay population, some IR couples, but still in certain areas it isn't hospitable for a non-white guy to talk to women, whether social stigma or what.

Still I think it's a decent city.

As an Australian, I've only ever seen Texas depicted as a redneck, ignorant and bible bashing sort of a place:lmao:

OF COURSE I know there are also plenty of decent people in Texas. I am just honestly describing how Texas is portrayed to other nationalities. ....

Frankly, I'd be scared to leave the airport there, when I am to travel again. .... I would be scared of people's ignorant reactions to tourists.

The thing about Texas, and many of the other states of our great union is that it is huge. Texas is the size of many other countries and was for about a decade a country in and of itself. They won independence from Mexico, then latter applied for admission to the USA. (That is why Texas is officially "The Republic of Texas") So one region of Texas will be as liberal as San Fransisco, the other as conservative as the Vatican.

Same for Colorado. Denver will be more liberal. Colorado Springs (home of NORAD and where the button would/could be pressed) is likely more conservative. Same for IL. Chicago and NE IL are less liberal than central IL, which are both more liberal than southern IL.

The funny thing is one can never really predict where will be socially liberal or socially conservative. Chicagoland votes Democrat consistently... yet most of those Democrats are very Christian (black Baptist or Roman Catholic, or evangelical) working class and blue collar people.

Colorado is historically conservative but turning blue. Rural areas are red like everywhere else in the US. Boulder is one of the most liberal places in the US, while Colorado Springs is one of the most conservative.

I lived in Denver for 6+ years and like it for it's lack of identity. It leans liberal and now half the population is from other states, coming from all directions: Texas, California, all of the Midwest. The natural result are average, open-minded people.

Blacks are quite the minority there, however the Latino population is quite large. Latinos are so common that I feel they are accepted like anyone else. Unfortunately I feel the school and college age Blacks are all wearing their pants knee high, being all gangster like.

Denver attracts people who are seeking a lifestyle. Decent 4 seasons, active outdoor life, educated professional-minded. Bigger-city life, smaller-city people. Yes, the LoDo women look great, take care of their bodies, put on hot dresses for a night out, are young, single, and didn't start having kids at 20 y/o.

I had a friend there who was tall, Black, attractive, articulate, and had to fight women away with a big stick. If you're anything like that then you could have a great time.

Yeah I had the impression that the women in the Denver area were snow bums so to speak, but no I didn't see anything like that. They reminded me of the type of women I would see in DC. Sexy business professional, educated, etc.

It's funny that I feel where I live now that is harder to find. Not many professional women here, women marry early, have kids even earlier, ridden with tattoos, drink and smoke a lot. Even moreso since I work in the tech field, there are even less women. My family jokes around with me saying I'm 'picky' yet a lot of my peers feel my requests are not unreasonable at all considering my personal accomplishments.

I don't want to just move to a location just for women, but seriously Denver sounds right up my alley and based on my experiences there it would be an excellent move for me at 30/31.
