Elias33
I can't even begin to put in in words what exercise has done for me. It is empowering. I have 3 cardio days and 3 resistance training days, it is a good combination to gain endurance and strength. I sleep better, I look better, I feel better, I am stronger. Those reasons should be enough for anyone to get off the couch and get busy. But that would be a simple explanation of what fitness can do for one's life. I got my self a six pack without ever entering a party store. I feel like I live life much fuller and feel pride of this achievement no one can take away from you.
Madman81
I should bookmark this thread and make it mandatory reading by our patients. There are so many benefits. Where these really come to the forefront are in the over 40 group. So distinct. Fit vs overweight...smokers vs non smokers, etc. younger people don't realize how health issues creep up on them. Too many to list here. I admire those who actually get in shape after letting things go. Also a reason to keep in shape...so much easier. A reason to get in shape when 30 rather than 35...40 rather than 45, etc. Start now because its easier than tomorrow. Well said. One of my favourite inspirational quotes regarding exercise is that you'll never regret going for a workout... you'll only regret NOT going. Then there's that old cliche that still holds true: "The best time to start was ten years ago. The second best time is now." I've been on a health kick since Christmas Day. Just before Christmas, I stepped on a scale and saw 239 lbs. I'm 6'1, 41 years old, and that scared me -- I've never been that heavy in my life. And in my own mind at least, I don't think I look like a "fat guy", just a big guy -- but according to BMI calculators that's "obese", so it's likely that I was just deceiving myself. Anyway, since then I've been tracking my calories religiously, I've reduced my alcohol intake radically, and I've been exercising almost daily. And lo and behold, as of this morning, I've shed nine pounds. So, things are going great so far!
Madman81
I'm not fit and at 46 it's getting a little late for me, isn't it. Do I get a cookie for not smoking? Like to know what injuries I've sustained exercising? The broken bone and the torn ligaments and all the strains. I've been following this guy for a couple of months now: About me | gertlouw His before-and-after photos are pretty impressive, especially when you consider that he started when he was into his 40s and is now nearly 50. regine_phalange
About 6 months ago, we went to a movie theater, with two levels. Facing me was an elevator and a double level of stairs (zig zag). I turned to my 5 year old - and said "want to have some fun?" She said "yes" - I then proceeded to pretend I was a fire fighter, threw her over my shoulders and ran up the two flights of stairs making siren sounds. I am 48 - she weighs 43 lbs. I felt no discomfort, nor was I really out of breath at the top of the two flights. . Thats all the reason I need for working out - thats the biggest improvement - fun with my daughter - memories for both of us. you are the sweetest dad
SpiralOut
- stress relief - reduced back pain (from hip-opening yoga classes) - feeling more in tune with myself - increased feeling of independence (biking instead of taking the bus) - being told that I'm awesome (and crazy) by people when they find out how many km I can bike in one day Also, meeting some great new people. I've been looking for more women friends and so far I get along best with the women in my fitness group. A few other people I've known for years but didn't talk to much have come out of the woodwork. We have some shared interests now, I guess.
