Is apathy more positive than negative?

Recommended Posts

I think it empowers you, especially in the right circumstances.

It might appear I'm just "blaming others", but I really have been stepped on by people and employers. Initially there was the desire to measure up, prove myself, gain their approval. Then I realized certain people simply want to take from you. Your efforts won't be reciprocated. You will not measure up.

This idea of "measuring up" is nothing more than a source of anxiety. Once all emotional investment is removed, once their approval no longer matters, a weight is lifted. People will be powerless over you.

A truly apathetic person may never be happy, but they also won't be miserable, and that's why apathy is regarded as negative. People actually WANT to see you miserable. They want to believe they hold this power over you, to influence your emotions.

F them.

Apathy can get you fired.

It may be a good occasional strategy, but at work, it's strongly inadvisable.

be more selective; if you're going to

measure up, prove myself, gain their approval.
, then choose the right people to do that to.

Colleagues either give a damn or resent you.

Done in the right way, within the right quarters, will, conversely, pay dividends.

Apathy means I won't care about getting fired. I can always scrape by on unemployment until I find something else.

Is that honorable? No, it's not.

But neither is lying to me about promotions, and expecting more and more work/responsibility without any additional compensation.

Yes I'm already looking, but in the meantime...

Apathy has nothing to do about caring or not caring about something, its more to do with the inability to act regardless of what your mind tells you to do.
