Health anxiety over flus/colds/norwalk virus etc...

Recommended Posts

Does anybody else get REALLY concerned about this stuff? The worry of 'catching' something while out and about?

I know I do. When I come home, I wash my hands, I carry hand sanitizer with me at all time. I am not obessive about it...UNTIL today, when I hear that the 'norwalk virus' is back. (Really BAD stomach bug) I do not ever throw up and that is a fear of mine so I feel soooo paranoid about getting this illness. Yeah right now it is easy to sit back and think, NO big deal!! Ya barf yer guts out for 48 hours or so then feel better! Tell me that during an anxiety attack or a highly anxious day in general! I DO not want to get this bug and right now I'm not having a good day. I was out for the morning and now I'm kinda worried!

Am I alone on this one? Anyone else feel this way ever?

WWIU....

I'm so bad that I hold my breath when I pass strangers or get into an elevator. :o I'm so afraid of getting sick then passing it onto the kids. And I HATE public restrooms.

didn't realize the really bad stomach bug had a name, but yeah, it gets scary hearing about it going around.

we do the 'wash hands well' drill at home and in public – another VERY important thing is to STAY HOME WHILE YOU'VE GOT THE BUG. It drives me nuts to hear someone say, 'well, I've got the flu, but I didn't want to miss work.' ewwwww  that's how flu epidemics spread!

WWIU: just keep on with the good hygiene, I think the idea of carrying a hand sanitizer is an excellent one.

now, if you do end up with the bug (Norwalk or otherwise), it's important to stay hydrated, even sucking on ice chips if that's the only way to get water into you.

I personally don't get the heaves when I get sick, but the Texas trots are a pretty common reaction! My husband is opposite: he doesn't have problems with diahrrea, but he gets close to yakking his brains out when he's got a bug ... not sure if it has to do with a gag reflex or what, a former co-worker tells me that her son refuses to throw up, so the symptoms manifest themselves otherwise.

I had enlarged nodes behind my ears years ago and was also afraid of lymphoma - my mom has it. They can check your WBC's to see if everything is norm. They told me mine were just prominent.

Thanks everyone!

I don't throw up ever, but I do get those 'texas trots' once in a while! LOL! ( Or the Hot Bums Squirts as we call it in our family! EWWWW I know!)

I do practice good hygiene, and yes, I do hold my breath out there sometimes. Depends on the coughing fit and how it sounds coming out of others! LOL!

Yeah I know that too. Happens when I get a sore throat that lasts too long or a feel a pain etc...That health anxiety part of me is actually alot better. It can totally f you up though!! Just remember 99.9 is just a fear and the .01 is not worth freaking about. I know easier said than done! All is mindset and controlling the thoughts.

Norwalk virus is something in Canada, just a bad stomach bug. Comes around once a year in the winter. I guess I can handle the odd cold, just no pukin'!! No way! I freak OUT!

ick, never heard of that virus but it sounds pretty crap-o.

well, it's winter time, and depending on where u live, if it's pretty cold where u are, your chances of getting viruses are decreased, just cause a lot of germs 'n such can't live in cold weathers.

if you live in a warm environment, dunno what to tell ya, but you can't live in fear of getting sick. i know a good way to keep up a strong immune system is to keep a good amount of vitamin C in you, maybe start drinking orange juice if u haven't, one of the best ways to get vitamin C.

if i find a website about this i'll post it, until then, take it easy 'n relax ;)

I'm in Ontario, Canada...And yes it is COLD here...But those bugs just never go away...They hibernate in buildings, work offices, subways, shopping malls etc...

HMMM, Maybe I should wear my Sars Mask!! (jk!) :p:D

Thanks Sarah! Sorry about your sis Tattoomytoe, hope she feels better soon!

'They' say that washing one's hands is the best defense. I also take multivitamins - not the mega-monster dose kind, just ones that have the RDA of vitamins and minerals. My immunity is great but I definitely notice a difference if I laze off on the vitamins and I seem to be more susceptible somewhere mid-cycle so I have to be extra sure to keep the vitamins up then.

The other trick is to not let yourself get too run down; make sure you've eaten enough, are getting enough fluids, and enough rest. Otherwise you can hold your breath 'til you're blue but if your system is down, the germs'll get ya.

I agree, less stress, rest, sleep, eat well, vitamins and lots of fluids are very important. Being a woman, I have to listen to what my body tells me to do sometimes otherwise I WILL overdue it and get sick. I have no problem lazing around if I have to. I'm so good at it somebody should pay me! LMFAO!!!
