Alcoholic Drinks - Low Calorie

Recommended Posts

So I'm trying to lose some weight as well as be healthier and while it's easy for me to cut out sugary drinks and juices ( I primarily drink water and when it's not water it's tea, coconut water and almond milk), it's harder with alcohol.

I'm a grad student and 9/10 meetings and events include complimentary wine and beer. I can pass those up, although I do enjoy wine so might indulge in a glass, but other socializing with friends and on the weekends includes alcohol. I am no alcoholic, but surviving grad school has included living for happy hours and weekend get togethers with a cocktail lol . I don't plan on completely cutting alcohol out, as at a party I want to be able to get a buzz and enjoy a drink. I already drink within reason but I normally don't care about the calories in my drinks; but now I want to be more conscious of it.

Anyone have any suggestions of drinks that are low calorie to order when I go out? At home when I entertain I can sort of measure my own stuff and buy low calorie mixers etc. and I primarily drink wine, but I would love to have suggestions on hand that I can order when I'm out and know that it will be fairly low calorie. So any ideas of low calorie drinks and cocktails?

Thanks :)

Red wine, or low calorie beer. When I drink, I choose Molson 67- only 67 calories per can or bottle, and a really low alcohol percentage.

What helps me to stay thin is the simple calories in, burning off ratio.

I work out like a crazy person with my job because it's so physical- if I'm going to have a beer or two in the evening- it's not a factor because I burn off more (or as much as) than I take in.

You can drink and eat what you want to within reason if you are an active person.

Vodka, fresh lime, and soda water (I think you call it club soda?) Make sure they don't put any of the lime cordial/syrup in, only a wedge of fresh lime.

Vodka and diet coke. Not many calories in that. It's basically going to get you the most alcohol per calorie that is realistic, without just downing shots. It is what I drink most of the time.

The principle can be extended to other drinks though - diet soft drinks have virtually zero calories, whereas fruit juices will have many. Hard spirits like vodka or whiskey pack a lot of alcohol and little else, whereas lighter stuff like wine or beer will pack many, many more calories for the same amount of alcohol. Better to pad out the volume with a virtually calorie empty mixer instead.

So basically, pick a spirit and a diet mixer.

REALLY Avoid anything creamy like baileys. Huge calorie count.

That's what I do. A lot of people get vodka and tonic water, but tonic water has a lot of sugar in it. Club soda is sugar free.

Vodka is one of the few options that doesn't cause my blood sugar to spike. And it only has about 65 calories per oz.

Malibu rum and diet coke is always my "diet drink." I also drink Mikes "Light" Hard Lemonade but they rarely have that in restaurants or bars, only the beer distributer really carries them (we live in PA, where they don't sell alcohol in anything other then a state store/beer distributer).

I hate the taste of the artificial sweeteners in diet sodas, so probably wouldn't order something with that, unless alcohol drowns out that awful taste, which I doubt.

I love Long Islands and saw on the list that lollipop posted that the avg calorie is 700 plus...wtff??!! That can't be right

Tequila and club soda sounds good.

Google search low calorie alcoholic drinks/cocktails.

Or, my preferred method: dance more and balance it out :)

I know how to use Google lol :p

Wanted to see if anyone had interesting ideas or go-tos outside of that.

Yess to the dancing!

It is hard, I usually go with scotch. The problem with it, is the 2nd one is the best and then you have to debate running for the 3rd.

I would alternate between a drink and water.

I normally hydrate when I drink anyway, after having a really bad hangover some years ago because of dehydration so I try to match my water intake with how much I drink.

It seems the biggest help is knowing about how many calories certain drinks are, as I never cared about that before, but at least now I'm conscious of it, so I can get drinks with that it mind. I don't like club soda normally but using that as a mixer or sugar-free mixers seems like a good compromise.

More important than the calories of alcohol itself... Just don't eat junk food after a night out.

Calories are not the be all end all. It's not just about calories in and out, but rather how those calories are absorbed by your body.

Calories in alcohol (specially in spirits) aren't absorbed that easily. The problem is, after you've had a boozy night, stopping at the kebab shop for a dirty kebab/burger. *THAT* is the main issue.

I have managed to lose weight just by watching what I eat during the day and not binging on junk food after going out. And I was drinking every day of the week (it's a thing in my line of work). If the munchies are too much, wait until you get home and eat something like a small sandwich when you get there. It'll have a heck of a lot LESS calories than a kebab.

Of course - sorry. The google line was only intended to be an opener for my dancing suggestion.

Fail...lol.
