RowanRavyn
Anyone got inexpensive ideas for a Midieval wedding?
Mr Spock
Rent your costumes!!! I can't remember the name of the society...let me google it-I mean if you WANT a medieval wedding you're probably famiilar with it. Outside? Inside? Tents?
Mr Spock
http://www.sca.org Don't know if they have wedding tips though...
RowanRavyn
Thank you so much. I feel like a major DUH on that one, I should have thought of it. We are looking for the place right now. His parents have a beautifully landscaped back yard, and we would love ot have it there if space allows. My fiance's brother is doing our ceremony. He is also writing music for it. Mr Spock
I couldn't remember the name of it either. Can you fit a tent in the backyard? The only somewhat medieval music I can think of is Dead Can Dance.... dunno. You want guests to do it too?
RowanRavyn
I love Dead Can Dance. I have a lot of Celtic music so it will "kind of" fit as well. We are all carrying swords. (we all already own them) The guests are welcome to come in costume or not, but most of our crowd will. It will likely be the parental units that won't. We are going to make the poets shirts for the guys I think. I have to get costumes for the kids, and I have to get their "vow" jewelry. Brian is taking vows with them too. Not sure if a tent will fit...and a friend of ours has a tent. OH YAY. :::HUGGLES:: Ideas!! I am so very nearly brain dead. Our core group of friends all want to chip in for the reception. Kind of a pot luck. I like the idea. Do you think its tacky?
Mr Spock
No, no one will know your wedding isn't catered (I mean except for lack of caterers) if you do it buffet style. If you're having a medieval theme you should have meat-I mean like roast pork, roast beef. etc. My sister had a budget wedding that WAS catered but it was a buffet style. Not as expensive. I am too busy being insulted on other threads to really take a look at the site but I'm SURE they'll have suggestions and instructions on how to make costumes, etc. I've known people active in the SCA who've had themed weddings...someone will have a webpage with links
Mr Spock
Added thought-I've got DCD as well but it's not really HAPPY music....
RowanRavyn
Oh, Posh. Ignore them. You know you'll have more fun over here. Ok well, maybe not...but still LOL

binturong
Oooh, I love medieval stuff! The only money savers I can help you with are to make as much as you can yourself. I think I probably saved $400 alone on the invitations. You said you were making shirts for the guys? If you don't have a pattern yet, wait until the fabric stores have sales...you can get patterns for as low as 99 cents. What kind of dress were you thinking of wearing? If it's something that just requires a simple chemise and skirt, make those yourself too. Unless you're an experienced seamstress, I would buy the bodice. And if your friends want to bring food, let them! It'd be rude to ask them to do it, but since they offered, there's no reason not to taken them up on the offer.
midori
I just discovered -- from my mom, of all people -- The Mediaeval Baebes. They're great, although since you say your brother is writing music maybe you're not looking for recorded stuff? http://www.mediaevalbaebes.com
Barby
Wow that sounds like it will be such an awesome ceremony! Too creative! It would be cool if ya take some pics so we can see how awesome it was! Also maybe you could have the ceremony at sundown and light the tent, surrounding area with candles. (just a thought) too bad you don't have the funds to get married in an old castle dressed up in those costumes (that would be even more awesome). But it sounds like your ideas are completely cool, I'm so excited for ya!
Artifact
I have absolutely nothing new to suggest, but the ideas are great! I also think a pot luck feast would be fun. Then, you would have a variety of food (maybe you guys could supply the mounds of meat Mr Spock suggested) and the buffet would make it casual enough that you can have time with all your guests. And it seems that at pot lucks even if some people don't bring food, there is alway too much.
tiki
Yeah, I'm jealous. It's such a unique idea...and seems very fitting for you, RR.
RowanRavyn
We have a tent we can borrow from a friend. He is also willing to do our photography as our wedding gift. He is an excellent photographer. We have access to almost all the music you've mentioned. We have a lot of it ourselves, so we are going to be mixing our own CD from it. We are also going to use CDs as the invitations. We have some amazing songs that mean a lot to us and the kids. A good friend gave us the idea of finding our family crests and blowing them up, painting them on a piece of canvas and using them as flags at the ceremony. Our friends are going to help us with the reception. His parents are furnishing costumes for his guys, and the drinks. We are also going to paint our family tartans on material to be used on the tables. I have gotten so many good ideas from the webbies that Mr. Spock shared. Please, keep em coming! We are so excited. RowanRavyn
They are done!! They are so beautiful. The honey took his family's tartan, and using PhotoShop faded the middle, and there in the middle in this beautiful Celtic font it says: You are invited to join A celebration of Family, Friendship and Love Along with the usual information. We got by so cheap. We had this amazing cardstock with matching envelopes left over from a job we did for a friend. All we have to do is pay for postage!
