Find out your ancestry and health risks

Recommended Posts

I got most of my results back from 23andme.com. You can get a DNA test for $99. Lots and lots of information. It was a bit scary because I wasn't sure what I'd find out. Odd bits of information, too, like I sneeze when going from darkness to bright light. I do! Lists of dozens of conditions, most of which I'd never heard of and whether I am increased, decreased or average risk.

Definitely recommend. I can't vouch for the accuracy and some things are lifestyle related. For example, I am at increased risk for Type 2 diabetes, but that just means I should keep exercising and don't gain weight. It says I am at decreased risk for hypothyroidism but I have it.

If your ancestors came from Europe or Western Asia you are likely to be part Neanderthal. The average is 2.7% of your DNA.

I was reading a review of the site which said that some genetic conditions need more than one type of genetic test to be accurate. I will still print out my results and take them to my endocrinologist to see what he says.
