What's the answer? I've been waiting, lol!

You should do another one! One that I can understand, because Robert Z's is way over my head. :)

I'll do one...

From Proverbs 30 (don't look!)

"There are three things that amaze me -- no, four things that I don't understand: how an eagle glides through the sky, how a snake slithers on a rock, how a ship navigates the ocean,

and....

  1. how a fool may prosper.
  2. how wine soothes a man's troubles.
  3. how the locust march in formation.
  4. how a man loves a woman.
  5. how the prideful devour the poor.

I know the answer. I actually prefer the NIV translation for that verse. It sounds a bit more profound.

I've always wondered exactly what is meant by that verse.

3? That's a good one. :)

I like how in Proverbs, multiple times, the author uses this approach of...there are x things, actually y!! It's like you can see the lightbulb haha...

Here's one using the same structure.

There are six things the Lord hates,

seven that are detestable to him:

  1. haughty eyes,
  2. a lying tongue,
  3. hands that shed innocent blood,
  4. a heart that devises wicked schemes,
  5. feet that are quick to rush into evil,
  6. a false witness who pours out lies

and ...

A) a person who stirs up conflict in the community

B) a person that refuses to earn their keep

C) a person that causes injustice in the community

D) a person that uses a false balance

Me too...I love Proverbs!! It really does have lots of wisdom (imagine that, heehee). I think that one is (A) though. I'm pretty sure I've read that and was convicted a time or two (or three!).

Oh crap, TFW...

I'm gonna go with...A?

Good job!

IMHO, I think KJV actually contextualizes it a bit better...

and he that sows discord among brethren

Seems more specific in this context. Whereas stirring up conflict can be a good thing if injustice is going on. Discord comes across to me as someone that intentionally goes around trying to get people, that would otherwise get along well together, to fight with each other.

Yes, I prefer KJV when it comes to accuracy.

When it comes to a perfect balance between accuracy and readability, my choice is ESV (English Standard Version). Second choice is NIV.

Sometimes when I'm looking at a critical issue and I need to have razor precise translation, I look at Young's Literal Translation. But it's hilarious how awkward it sounds. All the tenses get mixed up and it's hardly readable. It's great, though, if you want to see what specific words are used in cases where other translations fudge it.

Just as a bonus...

A) a person who stirs up conflict in the community

B) a person that refuses to earn their keep

For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”

C) a person that causes injustice in the community

"Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’” - Parable of the unjust judge.

D) a person that uses a false balance

A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.
