theonlyjuan
Because it is illegal I guess. I have done more than my fair share, most people I know did too. It was no big deal I never abused them that bad. People with some really bad problems turn to drugs as an escape, doesn't make them bad. They just can't get the help they need. People who judge are usually the ones who have had a really good life and not needed an escape well, good for them. Supply and demand, it's in huge demand. They have been around for so long and will probably be around forever. Don't like drugs? then don't do them. Don't like people who do? don't have them in your life.
lucy_in_disguise
I recently read about an interesting study that indicated "addiction" may not be as central to drug abuse as we like to believe. The study involved crack "addicts" being given the option of a hit of crack or some cash while confined in a hospital setting. Surprisingly, many chose the cash over crack, indicating that they may normally abuse drugs for a lack of better options, not necessarily "addiction". The war on drugs has likely propagated some convenient but not necessarily correct views about drug use.
lucy_in_disguise
I would not classify myself as a drug addict, but I have gone through periods of abusing or relying on substances. For me, it is triggered by boredom/ depression more than anything. I believe I would be better off without those things in my life, but it's hard in today's society where many people ARE substance abusers and your average drinking habit or prescription pill dependency is not something that is frowned upon anymore. (At least where I live - just walk down any street in the winter in Chicago).
lucy_in_disguise
Writers girl also brings up a good point. Poor people "do drugs". The middle class takes "medication" or goes out for drinks. Our attitudes about these distinctions are shaped by propaganda and help prop up incentives that make for-profit prisons and big pharma rich.
