The doctrine of hell is a scare tactic

Recommended Posts

Hell does not exist after we die. If there is a heaven then everybody is going. The doctrine of hell was man made as a control tactic. Even some of the powers that be who know it to be a fable basically still preach it as a way to keep people on their toes. They fear the moral chaos that would take place in society if people knew they could go to heaven no matter what.

Even when someone is contemplating suicide other people try to talk them out of it by manipulating their minds with scare tactics about hell and some afterlife retribution. They figure everyone must be obligated to stay alive and be as miserable as they are. Who is anyone to say that suicide is never an option? Each person has the right to decide for themselves whether or not their life is worth living. There's got to be more in life than just staying alive for the heck of it. If a person decides to end their life because they know their dreams will never come true then it would be selfish for anyone to try and discourage them such as telling scary stories about hell and demons.

If I am wrong on all this then I will take my chances until I find proof. I have no respect for the Christian God who claims there is a hell and does not even provide proof that it exists. It is like pointing an unloaded gun at me and hoping I would be stupid enough to believe that it is loaded.

Unfortunately many Christians have fallen into that same level of stupidity assuming that they have a loaded gun pointed at them if they do not believe in Jesus and live a certain Christian life. Well I got good news. The gun is empty.

I debated responding to this, because while I don't want to take away from your main point about hell, I'm not sure that this bit about suicide isn't your main point after all.

As far as I know, no demonination, including the Catholics at this point, holds the view that suicide automatically means that you're going to ride a greased rocket sled to hell. So are you arguing that people shouldn't try to talk people out of committing suicide for any reason?

Heaven is the carrot, and hell is the stick. Both are control tactics, both are, more than likely, man-made tosh designed to keep the masses in line.

As they say, it's a permanent solution to a temporary problem...

Each person has the right to decide for themselves whether or not their life is worth living.

One thing's for sure: it's one decision they'll never live to regret....
