M30USA
I managed to pick up poison ivy and now it's all over my forearms, left hand, and it's starting to reach my scalp! I'm using Caladryl lotion. Any other recommendations? It's freaking burning and itching.

Author M30USA
So I've realized Calamine and Caladryl lotion are worthless. I took the advice of a physician assistant I know who said to use just straight-up alcohol. I just doused it in alcohol several times a day and it's finally starting to dry up. That makes sense to me since poison ivy is an oil--so you'd want to dry it out and get rid of the oil. Alcohol makes sense. And it's definitely working the best. It's still been almost 2 weeks now. I just didn't realize poison ivy lasts this long!

Shepp
Apple cider on a cloth is what I've always herd for anything like that! Thought I know some people suggest the inside of a banana skin rashes so that might work too!
JamesM
Patience....it does take time. The best solution for the itch I have found is to put the rash under hot water. Make it as hot as you can handle and enjoy the relief. This relief will last for quite awhile. I always stand in the shower and let the hot water hit it hard, or I hold it under the faucet and let the hot water run on it until I can't stand it. It is amazing how good it feels. And when you walk away the itch is gone. No lotion yet has worked really well, but some stuff by Aveena works best for me. Both have worked to a degree at different times. 1% Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream | AVEENO® (No other cortisone cream worked for me.) Calamine & Pramoxine HCI Anti-Itch Cream | AVEENO Benadryl cream worked once. Also, take a bath using Aveeno bath treatment. Soothing Bath Treatment | Oatmeal Bath | AVEENO® I did this once and it helped. My boys did this and every time they had alot of relief. Yes, I have had it many times. I first had to learn to identify it. Then I found out I had it in my yard. And now I have eliminated it all (I think) after five years of finding it and spraying. First, I sprayed it with Poison Ivy Roundup. Then I simply yanked all of the dead plants and roots out. Finally, I covered the area of landscape fabric, and planted a new garden over the area. While prednisone pills do work, I try to avoid them if I can. The last two times I "toughed" it out to see how long it would last without the meds. Honestly, the length of time that the rash lasted was about the same. The itch however disappeared quicker with the pills. But I learned how to cope and avoided the steroids. However, I have found that most people cannot handle the itch. (Night time is the worst. I got up alot to put my rash under hot water. ) Side note: The absolutely worst place is to get it in the "crotch" area. Yes, I have had it there twice! Hope something here helps.
amaysngrace
Do you live near an ocean? Jumping in is the best remedy I know of. If you don't go see a dermatologist. They have creams that help but you're going to need a prescription. I'm sorry you're suffering...that crap is nasty.
