StandingO
My GF lost her work out partner and wants me to work out with her. We have never been at the same gym other then visits. Our focus is totally different. In fact she is much more serious about the gym then I am. I would be more of a coach when it comes to her lower body routine. I would just slow her down. Right now she can lift double with her legs then I can. Upper body is the opposite where I do x2 to x3 what she can. I only do light casual lower body work as I just don't enjoy heavy lower body work and my knees, hip and old hernia are not cut out for it. I admit I love to work out my upper body though. Her gym is more of a big gym big price while I like the casual local community centre. I glad she wants me to join her but I don't want to join her gym. She has worked out alone very successfully too. Not many woman can squat like she does so she may need a male partner. Most men don't squat enough to be in her range either lol. She reached her goal and I thought she was going to turn it down a notch anyways. I think she can stay in great form with out a partner. I really don't like her gym. Think she can stay there until her membership expires (got less then a year remaining).and join me at the local comm centre. I just think at this stage she don't need the fancy gym and I most certainly don't. Hmmm join or not join. Last time I joined one of those gyms I regretted it. This time I may regret if I don't lol. TylerDurdenn
Why don't you like her gym? Surely you just go there to train?
JDPT
The LA Fitness I go to is literally a club. It's a humongous facility and they actually have a DJ come two nights a week and play music, all they need is to dim the lights and start serving alcoholic beverages and you can club and work out simultaneously. It's a little over the top for me as my objective is to go and do my thing as opposed to others. It's hilarious to see five guys surrounding one little woman on the gym floor, all hoping to accomplish the same objective. I chuckle at the sight.

JDPT
No way could I train at a place like that....crazy... TFY I would say 80% of the guys there take a very religious approach to lifting. They honestly look like they can compete at some body building competition. I was never much of a weight lifter. I prefer the "swimmer's body" lean and cut (that's for ME of course). I used to run 4 miles daily, but now I'm injured and haven't exerted myself at all. You just can't beat runner's high.

Most of those places around here you mentioned are filled with morons that do nothing but arms and have skinny little chicken legs..They also spend more time taking selfies and texting their buddies/gf's than actually seriously training. And I dont know who had the bright idea to paint the inside bright yellow and red.?..Looks like Ronald McDonald is going to come out of the store room and start handing people balloons... TFY Oh Gd, I think I have an idea which gym you are referring to, you literally have to go in there with sun glasses lol. I can respect their dedication to their physical appearance and health, clearly they have accomplished such gains with years and years of beating the craft. I was talking to a guy in the sauna the other day, he looked jacked and when he told me he was 50 I just couldn't believe it, now that's dedication. I just can't wait to heal from my injury so I can hit the floor again!
Author StandingO
It is full of very serious, unfriendly, inconsiderate types, also it attracts a younger crowd, a place for big egos, drug money types, up selling, over priced. Great equipment though JDPT exactly, big dudes like to stick there nose in and surround certain ladies but are total hogs at certain stations. Thats how my GF lost her partner lol. Well, in some ways I fit in has I could be considered one of those guys with built upper bodies and chicken legs but I am not proud of it nor do I try to expose my legs like some of them do. There are men with plus 19 inch arms, plus 50 inch chests and legs as slim as mine. You don't see any leg muscle twitching when they walk, calves much smaller then their arms. Most of these guys dont touch a squat rack and stay out of my GF's way though lol. Her legs muscles embarrass most of those men. Me too for that matter. Fortunately for me she says those guys are far more disproportionate then I am and is good with my chicken legs lol. On the otherhand there are many very serious types that have well rounded bodies. Over all I like the casual nature of the community gym or to be honest I still work out at home more often.
dichotomy
Hey whats the matter with 19 inch arms and 50 inch plus chests... Anyway....sounds like her time is winding down there - stick it out and join her. Sound pretty bad though - drugs? She could plan on head to your community gym, or maybe together you could start checking out new gyms in the area instead. I like working out at home myself, and recently canceled a big gym membership (although I liked it there and people were great except for all the old dudes there ).
thefooloftheyear
I miss the "old school" type of gyms... There was a place I belonged to in the 80's(ugh-old)...well this place was awesome. Tons of attitude...No one set foot in that place unless they could bench at least 275 and squat 400..Full of jacked mofo's who spit on the floor and threw weights around..I know it might sound intimidating, but to an 18 year old kid, it was awesome..No one would fck with you -providing you were serious..They had a manager who used to walk the floor and if he caught guys talking excessively or dicking around he'd yell at you and tell you to get going or leave. I made a ton of progress there..I went from benching 225 for 8 reps to 365 for 4 in less than a year. They had a wall where they'd put your name up if you benched 300/350/400/450 etc..The manager would have to witness it to be legit and you had to do it twice. Women members? Only one..the owners wife.. I laugh at the gyms today....If Rudy saw these guys texting with their smartphones while there working out, he'd probably smash the thing on the ground or call you a name and tell you to go home... Oh have the times changed..... TFY
deathandtaxes
You two sound like you compliment each other. You have the developed upper body and she the lower. Sounds like you both could stand to workout with each other. I don't get why some guys don't do the legs. Who the **** are they trying to impress? They're fairly easy to spot. They were those godawful sleeveless shirts and poopy sweat pants. And women who overdo legs are just as bad imo. OP, I hear you on why you don't want to do the lower body, but at least try! And if you have a hernia, why not get that thing fixed? Can you join the gym on a trial basis and workout with your gf? What have you got to lose? Why not suggest she come to where you normally work out? Of investigate an all new place together?

Great equipment though . I absolutely agree. This LA Fitness I frequent is such a great facility but filled with "hoodlums". There have been incidents of lockers getting broken into and such. The other day one of the managers this guy is huge walked into the locker room randomly screaming "are you opening lockers!! I'm going to beat the shiet out of ya brah!" I couldn't help but chuckle. And this is coming from management. Hence why I mentioned that I just go there do my thing and leave.

The weak link in that decision making process is usually motivation ...... not money ...... as it's fairly inexpensive to start with fundamentals. The best part about them is they are douchebag free environments .
Author StandingO
I stopped with barbell squats some time ago. I was doing goblet squats and lunges. I need to start again. These i can do at home for sure. My hernia is a old injury and operation but I can tell the area is prone to a rupture again.

Club and gym would be fun, for about five minutes! I could imagine a dj playing on the weight room floor where I go. Some of the larger gyms here are run by the YMCA. Spacious, lots of equipment. I'm trying but failing to recall what music they usually play in the weight room. Maybe it's a southern thing, but women at my gym get left alone to do their thing. Not that too many of them ever make it to the weight floor, though.
OpheliaSong
I wouldn't do it if I was happy where I was at. Gyms are for working out, not socializing or dates. She should get another female partner who has the same skill set and is in the same league fit wise. You shouldn't be expected to cater to her needs when you so obviously aren't into this as much as she is. You get to have a life too, don't you?
Author StandingO
This would be the best solution if she could come up with a female partner in the same league. Not many women she can just go ask who have that level of training or desire behind them though. Her/our good female friend started at a level squatting etc a little below mine and built up to 225 pounds squats over time. It worked because they consistently went together and this woman got hooked on it. They wanted the same thing. Before when I tried with my GF she wanted to spend much more time on lower body and I upper that it did not mesh the best. I was not in her league for lower body and she was not in mine for upper. She was the expert and I did not like her routine lol. We tried for a time, then the combination of going between two gyms, the time commitment (too much for me), our focus differences, our strength differences, her having to drag my butt to her gym at times, her preferring her gym hurt the workout partnership. Basically she would spot me on squats and use the weight as a first level set after warm up for herself, when I completed my sets we added weight for her and she continued on with me spotting. If it was not busy in her gym we could have two stations going but usually we did not. In my gym the squat rack was used for squats and bench etc as their is only one. I guess it worked ok because it was about encouragement and motivation support but I had much lower motivation and desire for her workout routines. It could work but I am not the idea partner for her. Interesting mix of people that say join her gym compared to don't join. Edited February 23, 2014 by StandingO
Author StandingO
Went to her gym on a temp pass today. I rather enjoyed my wo today with the gf. She got me on a few different types on leg exercises that did not involve barbell squats but rather a ball or kettlebell. Even some one leg leg pressing. Still I cant see myself joining this gym.

Author StandingO
She knows my opinion of her gym. She paid good money so she will use it until it expires for sure. They have a month to month option which I was not aware of. Yesterday we spend time on only upper body and again I enjoyed the work out with her. Nice to see her on the bench press torquing up 85 and 95 smoothly and perfectly. Her old female partner was there with her new bf. I see no reason why the two girls can't still work out together but at least for now she is glued to her new bf.

I could never work out at a place like this. The gym I go to is also big, but there's very few distractions. Also, for some reason, it seems to be mostly men there (which is also my preference since attractive women in workout outfits are also a major distraction to me ).
gaius
I get all kinds of skin punctures now and then and I've never really had to worry about antibiotics or anything. Why? Because I don't work out at the gym. I have a weight set at home and use the sidewalks/nearby track where I'm not surrounded by people trying to share their staph and other disgusting maladies with me. I'll never get the appeal of a gym, big or small.
Author StandingO
I can't believe it but I am actually enjoying the gym. Not because of the gym but working out with the GF. She has not been too hard on me until this week. My legs were feeling so wasted later that night and just a normal day leg day for her. She was really giving me a hard time in a kidding way. Her old partner may have broke up with the BF so just as I am starting to come around she may be back with her old work out partner lol. Certain times the gym can be so crowded with huge dudes hogging the weights it is nice to be in a group of 2 or 3.
Noproblem
You don't get it! This fancy gym is her second home now! You are her boyfriend and since she is more serious about her workout than you are, you should be the one joining her Gym. This issue will become a serious problem in the future. She is hot, without a guy there, someone can steal her away from You. He being there all the time with her, trying so hard. Eventually, he'll get her while you are enjoying your local small gym and neglecting her. A female wants a companion; she doesn't want some fleeting moments of pleasure.
