ithappenedagain
I just heard about this natural product called St. Johns Wort. It is supposed to be great for mild depression. It also is great for Anxiety, Stress, OCD, etc.. You can purchase it at pretty much any grocery store. Has anyone tried this out as an alternative for prescription meds? St. John's Wort - What Should I Know About It? I am gonna give it a shot. I will let you all know how it goes.

pickflicker
Before taking anything that increases serotonin, see your doctor. St John's Wort reacts with loads of other medications. Possible Interactions with: St. John's Wort | University of Maryland Medical Center Specifically, ladies who read this, it can interfere with the birth control pill. Zoloft, a mild SSRI prescribed by a doctor on the other hand, does not. Nor does it interact with half the things on this list. Just because it's a herb, doesn't make it better. Has a doctor diagnosed you with depression? If not, I would not suggest taking anything relating to depression or anxiety until you have been properly diagnosed. 'Self-diagnosis' does not count. Madman81
I've been advised before in the course of my work, by one of the top forensic psychiatrists in western Canada, that St. John's Wort is of little value in fighting against depression.
BlessYourCottonSocks
Honestly, if you have a chemical imbalance and serious anxiety, St Johns doesn't work. I've tried it and I felt no different. Prescription drugs work better if you have a serious diagnosis. When I took St Johns, I felt like it was more of a placebo effect. I took this when quitting smoking, helped a bunch. If you don't notice anything, you can always try prescription medication, but it is good to go with herbs first. There are many things you can do to help you with mild depression, this shouldn't be your only plan of attack. Exercise, eat properly, take your vitamin D (regulates serotonin), and make sure you get your sleep! Of course, if your depression is clinical by nature, you need to get professional advice.
