Preparing for NZ Iron Man

Recommended Posts

Competing again this year, I have to be there by the 4th. For the first time ever, I do not feel fully prepared. I am in great shape but my head is all over the place. Any spiritual practices or advice on balance? I absolutely was unfocused tonight in sparring..not me at all.

Thanks,

Grumps

Haha, you've been reading too many erotic threads here and it threw your game.

I hope you can pull it together. And good luck!!!

My wife had a health scare last week, so I am pretty sure that is where my head is right now. The erotic threads are entertaining but don't really get into my head. As far as training, I am in excellent shape and my heart is healthier than it has ever been, though I don't consider forties old since I see men and women doing triatholons/marathons well into their seventies and have no health issues. My mind is probably preoccupied with her next check up. I just answered my own question....might be time out put some of my Buddhist Spiritual Practices to use.

I hope she is okay. Sending good thoughts your way. I have an app for meditation called Staying in the Present which helps me get refocused. I think you can still find it. Anything By Pema Chodran is good too.

I was looking over the website for IM and that is some daunting stuff. You are a ninja.

Thank you for your warm wishes and thoughts. I have that app. And have read a bunch of Pema's books. My daughter says I am a ninja all the time too so thank you, I think it is a compliment.

We will know more later this week. My wife is pretty calm and positive and doesn't want to scare the kids and probably me too, so she is probably taking it on herself to be strong. She keeps telling me no matter what, she needs me to go to IM competition so I am going with her next appointment so she can't smooth things over because she thinks she knows what is best.

Thanks again,

Grumps

Make the jaws drop with your performance!

When I have racing thoughts I do something with my hands or body and think about the sensation (eg. cooking, the smell of ingredients, the stirring, etc. Or yoga, it's very helpful and a great concentration exercise -- has helped me a lot and has transferred to other aspects of my life).

But, on the other hand, since you are concerned about your wife, I'm not sure there is a way to slow down the thoughts. Try to be positive, health scares always happen and most of the time they don't mean anything.

Wishing the best results.

It would be best not to use Peres Hilton as a resource. :lmao:

It is talking about lifelong hard training, not just training when you get older!

If you actually bothered to read it you would see it links to a study that's covered by the New York Times. And there's plenty more information out there about the risks of heavy training on the heart after 30 if you've never done it before.

It's not a great idea to encourage someone to do something that has serious health risks at their age. ;) Let's be a responsible advice giving community.

And Armend or whatever your name is, yes I make a point to encourage people to quit smoking because I'm jealous. Brilliant post. For you if you're over 50 please run 6 marathons a year.

Oh, you haven't read his posts then. I am a long time lurker so I have. He isn't over fifty and he is former military who is a MMA amateur competitor, runs eight miles daily and goes to the gym all the time, and this is just one of many IM Triathlons he has ran....so it is safe to say he probably isn't in the category of never done it before. I doubt they get many Iron men or women who have never exercised hard before competing. :lmao:

Comparing exercise at forty to smoking is just funny to me...but, you are right, one shouldn't smoke at any age.

I thought he was 70/80 based on his posts, but when people say they're forty it can easily mean late forties so it could still apply. ;) And again, it's about strenuous exercise such as marathon running. People can point out Perez Hilton and switch strenuous exercise around to regular exercise all they want because they don't like what's being said but what I originally linked is exactly what's being brought up. Something to think about.

Good luck, Grumps! And best of health for the missus, too.

I'm curious, though, don't you have to fly to NZ just to participate in this? I would've thought there would be comparative or better races in the USA! :p

Good luck, Grumps! And speedy recovery for the missus, too.

Thank You, Elswyth. The doctor found a lump and wants to do further tests, and my wife is convinced that it is nothing so I am not going nuts yet, just waiting, but my mind is reacting sporadically.

It is the Iron Man Triathlon and yes, I have to fly in a few days. It is well worth the money....I am very competitive and this is really a pinnacle of fitness for an amateur like me. It is a vacation I take every year to wherever we decide to do the Triatholon. I also am going to do some bungee jumping, hiking, BASE jumping with a group of guys that I met through my first Iron Man in Hawaii years ago.

Best,

Grumps

That is a great accomplishment...all those marathons and all the great places you visited. We are going to jump off that bridge too. You and I would probably get into all kinds of dangerous situations.

Yes, I know, and if you go to the actual article it doesn't say what your link suggests. Obviously you didn't even bother to read it.

Just wanted to say good luck and enjoy your time in New Zealand.

I'm hoping your wife is fine too, sending positive vibes.

Man, if you are forty something and doing this...you are a ninja. I watched an Iron Man Triathlon on the Big Island one time and it is no joke. I am impressed as hell.

It is no wonder your mind is wandering with your wife having a health scare. Hang in there. I am hoping everything is fine and you finish the competition with at least a silver or gold time. I would be extremely happy to just finish and I am a pretty fit guy.

I want to finish in the seventeen hour frame and maybe have a silver or gold time. I have competed at Kona before, very beautiful there. Probably my favorite Hawaiian Island. The volcanoes there can't be beat...the military still has some cabins in the Kiluea Park and it was incredible hiking around the rims. Thanks, oh and welcome to LS.

Best,

Grumps

I didn't know you were from NZ. We already have everything planned but I thank you for the offer. Very excited to do some of your outdoor activities. Thank you, my wife did get her results back and all is well. It was a cyst so we have been celebrating all day. I keep squeezing her and I think she is about done with me. I have been very grumpy lately so she informed me that she never wants to really get sick because I have been a bear to live with. I am just so relieved.

Wish me luck,

Grumps

P.s. I meant silver or bronze time, of course.
