Hence, the belief we evolved from animals. I've just singlehandedly reconciled the two opposing sides of this endless debate. Maybe I'll win the Nobel Prize! The observation that progeny of such unions were lacking in basic body parts or fully functioning mental capacities. I dunno, what does the bible tell us? In the current world, genetics operates in such a way where the greater diversity there is between the genes of two parents, the less likely it is for a birth defect to occur. This is because the new zygote "picks" certain genes from each parent to use as its own. If you have two direct relatives, there is less diversity and therefore a defect within the family would have no way of being passed by since there are no other gene options. The Bible suggests that, even after Eden, the first several generations lived in a world where their genes were not subject to as many errors and diseases as we have today. They even lived longer--up to 969 years in the case of Methuselah. If this is the case, then the first several generations from Adam onward had no necessity for procreating outside their own immediate family.
