is this odd? how to explain?

Recommended Posts

Went to gym today, weighed in at 187.

worked out.

Weighed again (same scale), wearing same clothes. weight 191.

I didn't eat, goto the toilet, i did drank some water, but literally just to wet my dry mouth.

how is this possible? I am not that educated, so perhaps someone with an understanding of this science could explain?

Did you use the same scale? Another scale might not have been correctly calibrated. If it was the same scale someone may have jumped on it and knocked it off calibration. It's all about calibration.

There are a couple of possibilities.

1. Scale is on an uneven surface. Even a very slight tilt can throw off the accuracy of the reading by a few pounds. This is especially true on a digital scale.

2. It could be fluid from the workout itself. While typically DOMS and associated fluid retention take 24-48 hours to set it, sometimes fluid build-up can start to occur during a workout, particularly a vigorous one (ever see a "pump" on a muscle that's been worked?).

I have noticed these things;

- After working out, my body tends to retain water (thus my scale shows Im heavier). Also I have to drink more than 1.5 lt of water daily. If you are also some days before your period, you will have extra water retention.

- When developing muscle, I gain some weight because muscle tissue is heavier than fat.

If you want to weigh yourself daily, you're better off doing it at the same time, and in the same state, every day. There will be fluctuations, of course, but they should be less radical.

Thanks everyone for your replies, all good feedback.

1) its the same scale I use everytime, at the Y. it didn't look off kilter and if it was out of calibration, it was only 40 minutes or so between weights.

2) re: my period. if I had a period to worry about, the weight on the scale would be the least of my concern! male species here :-)

I will check my weight when I goto gym again tomorrow, just thought it was odd!
