RoseMadder
Really? Look at how Jesus dealt with the Pharisees. The Pharisees were very much like the religious south today--hanging onto a "form of godliness but denying its power". Jesus HATED those people who thought they were self-righteous and favored by God, but really blind and naked and wretched to the truth. (Ironic, it is, that Pharisee literally means "loved/favored of God". It was clearly a self-endowed term.) Well I doubt there's many "nice, swell southern chaps" who've been responsible for atrocities like Moses committed and given that on the whole Jesus preached a message of peace and delivered the all encompassing command of 'love one another' then I'd think that they'd have a complicated relationship.... Like Dumbledore and Professor Snape in Harry Potter but more clouds

pureinheart
What is your real motivation for asking this? And Modern church?? God and His word was the same then and now. He never change! So if some churches change things its because they dont know God! And lean on their own understanding. We need to accept Jesus in our heart and follow Him and let Him guide us. Instead of leaning on the church blindly or on the pastor. I d\cant judge etc for example Abraham and the situation with his son with notting else then what God was and is teaching us true that story. He was faithful to God and that was one way God tested his faith. We cant use today or back then worlds judgement for things of God. Because its God that give us knowledge to understand heavenly things. If we go by how humans see things in the bible they will say all is wrong so they can sin M30 likes to keep it real and IMO this is about as real as it gets. What I failed to take a good look at is the humanness involved with the Prophets of the O/T. IMO if I don't recognize this and understand it, I'm in a world of hurt when these questions come up in the real world…and they do:laugh:
Allumere
Do you know that Bible-based Alcoholics Anonymous has a higher success rate than secular AA by a factor of 12? (Twelve.) I have seen various references to success rates and there always is question in regards to metrics so I certainly can't weigh one over the other. Now do I personally think it can be an important tool? Yes of course but I do not think it is the only tool nor do I think it is a mandatory one for everyone. I am the first to say in times of trouble, lean on your faith and the teachings but I know many a non-believer that has been able to succeed. Ok...back to the main topic

pie2
I'm just gonna pose the question and see what kind of responses I get. Would Moses, Abraham, John the Baptist, Paul, and John (the disciple) be considered bad husbands and bad family men in the opinion of most modern day church-going females? Let it rip. I'm curious what Moses and Abraham's wives would say while wandering through the desert for 40 years, or after the whole sacrificial son thing. I'm sure they had their moments of doubt! There were some great "husband/father" traits there though: "humblest man on earth", "father of the multitudes"? Pretty impressive! But I agree with TFW. Probably comparing apples to oranges. Even comparing Old Testament customs to those that came after Christ is difficult, imo. Though Noah seemed pretty cool, in the husband/family arena. Author M30USA
Just to switch this up a bit... Would Abigail (went behind her husbands back and then married David after he killed Nabal), Sari (told Abraham to sleep with Haagar), Rahab (a harlot that saved the spies of Israel), be considered bad wives and bad family women in the opinion of most modern day church-going males? Basically, when we are trying to compare these people to modern day husbands and wives, we have to make sure we aren't comparing apples to oranges. I guess I just think there's nothing new under the sun. I'm sure Abigail and Sari would be considered bad women in today's church. But if God says a person is righteous, I'd believe God. My only issue is...are they really after God's heart (like David)? A person can mess up and scew up, but if they are truly after God's heart, then you can see it. One of my favorite people, as you know, is Keith Green, the 70s-80s Christian musician. People say he was overbearing and intense. He spoke on a daily basis as if the Gospel was a do or die matter and it kind of pissed people off. He also was known for having a temper. But, man, if you read this guy's writings, he was absolutely on fire with the Holy Spirit. He acted as if nothing else mattered than pleasing God and obeying the Holy Spirit. Those poor Pharisees... I'll reserve judgment until you make more of a case. I'm not totally seeing it. My ex-wife's family is from the religious south. They claim to be Christian. They flat-out told me they think people are basically good. After bringing false accusations against me in divorce court (including her parents), her dad actually gets up on the stand and refers to him and his family as "super nice". This is the exact mindset of the Pharisees.
pureinheart
You might appreciate this: Thank you, and I did appreciate it greatly. I see some of those images on FB a lot, people think they're ok- it's actually "The Beautiful Side Of Evil", which was one of the first books read upon becoming saved.
