JDPT
I've never done any research pertaining to this but I see now that antibiotics can increase appetite. I started taking a few days ago and I've been starving since. I ate so much today, luckily it was tilapia and steamed broccoli. I have a few more days worth of antibiotics that I must take. I hope for the exaggerated appetite to eventually subside.
FitChick
Maybe it's the health problem you are taking the antibiotics for that is making you hungry. Antibiotics upset my stomach and wreak havoc on my digestive system and I try to avoid them at all costs. I think that is true for most.
Author JDPT
I always take them with food, orherwise it'll end up eating through my stomach walls. But one thing is for sure, I've been overeating today. I just had a can of tuna. Luckily I've been stuffing my face with healthy stuff.
PinkSapphire
Microbiologist here who studies infectious disease and develops antibiotics. The original purpose of antibiotics was to cause weight gain; back when penicillin was first developed it was found pretty quickly that it caused people and animals to gain weight and was given for that purpose. It's why our livestock is pumped full of it - to increase their size - which it does very well. They will increase your appetite, but you should try hard to stick to a schedule and amount of food so that you won't gain weight. Or, wait until after the 10 days and work out harder to lose what you've gained; antibiotics are designed to very quickly help one put on weight. Scientists are now considering the over-prescription of antibiotics and their early use purposely to cause weight gain is partly responsible for the obesity epidemic. Of course, this needs more exploration, but it does make sense. I think the New York Times ran an article about that recently? Anyway, good luck, and feel better from your illness soon!
