Beth
Not sure what 'trick' anti-depressents accomplished, but you should talk with the doctor that prescribed them. Usually they an aide used with therapy to treat depression.

Usually they an aide used with therapy to treat depression. Therapy is used for regular everyday situation depression, say loss of loved one or a job or SO. Anti-depressants are used for clinical depression which is a medical condition and does not respond to therapy in any way what so ever. You don't TALK someone out of clinical depression. It is a defect with the neurotransmitters in the brain. A person who is clinically depressed will cease to funciton as a human being for 2 to 3 months or more at a time. I had a relative who became seriously clinically depressed 10 yrs ago and he was in bed for 3 months and probably uttered about 10 sentences during that 3 months. Only time he could get out of bed was to go to bathrooom. And he lost about 30 lbs.
newby
i had depression for about 7 years with two major breakdowns, one of which was so severe that the symptoms were a combination of schitzophrenia and manic depression. i didnt actually realise that i was depressed the first time around, i thought the things i was living through were real, they were to me. the second time i tried antidepressants but i was terrified of losing control and i kept thinking if i took them i wouldnt know what i was doing. i managed to pull myself out of this mental state by doing lots of yoga and meditation and alternative healing, it took about 2 years and i still have things but i can honestly say that comparing the state that i was in to the way i feel now it is unbelievable, i would never have thought i could be happy again ever. people say do things see people etc, i have begun to do this now but i couldnt have managed that at the time. it irritates me when people say this as though its so easy and simple. it isnt, it takes alot of work. meditation can calm the mind and over time change the brain chemistry, i believe because this is what happened for me, also believe it or not changing diet can do alot. making sure you have all the vitamins you ned especially b vit and magnesium and amino acids. all of these things anything that is good for body also benefits mind, things i think are helpful are: yoga, tai chi, acupuncture, reiki, meditation, nutrition
