Babolat
Yes, I did love her. I broke up with her and she spent 8 months working on herself, for herself (not for me as she put it, and I believe her). She would give me periodic updates on how she was not drinking as much, getting her life together, etc. She came back after 8 months and said whe wanted to try again. She told me she was not drinking as much, as she drank 3 glasses of wine with dinner talking to me. I tried, the feelings never came back for me 100%, I think there was too much history and it was really not just her drinking, more our lifestyle differences in general. Our moral and value differences. It was also like waiting for what's around the next corner, when will she get drunk again. Even though she had cut back, she would tell me "oh, I'll get drunk again", just not as often. One of the last times I went to her place, she was smoking and drinking wine from a box in her refrig. She was using an eCigarette prior, so I got confused when I saw her smoking. And, she never smoked in her apartment. When I got home my clothes stunk like smoke. Plus the whole drink after drink from wine in a box in her refrig, just, turned me off. Edited April 14, 2014 by Babolat
Fugu
Alcohol is friendly with some and downright wicked to others. My sister has been fighting alcoholism all her adult life, and I'm convinced that she'll probably end up dead within the next year. We've tried rehab but she just won't admit that alcohol's got her number. I think that's the key thing here. Some people drink occasionally, and some are even heavy drinkers - I'm probably a heavy drinker. But I know why I drink and I have my ground rules. I don't drink to escape - I'm just a lover of craft beer and wine and I love a good buzz. But some people literally need alcohol to get them through a rough day, or a rough week, or even a life. If that's you, then just put the bottle down...forever. Drinking to escape will kill you.

They've decided to get as many legal escapes as possible. Don't get me wrong, I have drunk too much on many an occasion, but I didn't need to constantly get my stress calmed. I always wondered how those people handle a crisis.

This forum is about addiction. We don't choose to have this disease. That's why we need help because we clearly can't do it on our own and those of us who can are incredibly strong people. It isn't an easy battle to win and you never overcome it. Like I said, it's a disease.
