Quitting smoking

Okay so I went to a hypnotists today - and now I wanna smoke!!!! Problem is I signed up for the hypnotist because my friend's doctor told her she HAD to quit due to the recent onset of asthma - so I figured I would be supportive. Of course she didn't show, but I did so I went through the seminar.

Now I keep telling myself hey I can reallys start next week, after my long weekend in a country that allows smoking everywhere! But I know this is a cop out - and I shouldn't. How do I keep focused? I don't think I'm craving nicotine, but I'm already coughing and just want to inhale that smoke!!!!

Its only been 4 hours - please help me with tricks/encouragement/WHATEVER!!!! I really don't want to fail at this, but I really wanna smoke!!!!

Sorry for being whiney and thanks in advance

You are not being whiney. It is really hard to quit smoking. I know I have tried. I think it is the hardest thing I will ever do!

Keep yourself focused on the goal, to have a better lifestyle. But if you don't have you mindset straight and wanting to do it you will not do it.

Most people that succeed in quitting smoking, succeed because they want to and have their mind set on it. You have to want to quit smoking for your own reasons not someone esles.

I know - I think that is why I'm so torn here! On the one hand, hey I really need to quit, on the other hand I would not have been there had my friend not needed it.

So I'l going to bed in a few minutes, and when I get up in the morning, that patch is going right on! Hey its been 5 hours - its a start!

Oh man! I know how you feel!

I quit smoking 7 weeks today actually! I still get the craving to smoke BIG TIME! I wasn't a person that was told to quit, I just knew it was my time. I had a surgery coming up, so while I was in the hospital, we slapped a patch on me...and that was it.

Just remember, that a cigarette craving lasts for 2 minutes at the most. If you can keep in your head that it'll only be 2 minutes ... you'll be able to get through it.

Also, replace smoking with something. If you find something else that you like, for example, a hard candy or a cup of coffee, maybe jumping on the tread mill for 2 minutes...

They say it gets better and eventually you don't even want to smoke.

Good luck sister...I know it's hard.

P.S. You wouldn't believe how great things smell now!

I smoked for almost 15 years. I quit when I met my husband. he hated the smell of it and threatened to stop dating me if I didn't stop smoking. So, I quit, cold turkey. Haven't picked up one since.

It was so hard, but I had motivation.... I was in luuuuv.

Find something to motivate you.

How about this:

That is one motivation that did not work for me. My bf did not like me smoking but I still did not quit. And after 3 years with him I still smoke and now so does he! We have both feel into the same hole. Though him starting was not me, it was when he went off to get shipped to Iraq he came back smoking....I was actually shocked! Though now when I do get in the mind set I have someone to quit with. I have thought about it twice and my next time to try to stop will be in december when I graduate and if I still don't have my mind set right I am definitely quitting when I get married! My parents don't know I smoke(or at least we don't talk about it and I don't do it in front of them) and on my wedding day I would not like to be sneaking around!

Something esle about this. My mom quit smoking for 17 years for my dad. But then she started back. She still loves my dad but she went back to it! So you really have to do it for you own reasons!

Didn't you? Some countries now put pic's like that on packets of cigarettes. What they should show you is a healthy lung for comparison, but my guess is they don't 'cause they aren't too attractive either!

I was going to post about quitting also.

After being a smoker for more than 20 years I quit. It's been a month now. It was supposed to be a birthday thing but as my b'day is close to Christmas & then New Years I figured it was too much to ask that I quit right before then.

I agree with tigerskye

Most people that succeed in quitting smoking, succeed because they want to and have their mind set on it.

To date I have found it surprisingly easy (careful now, I don't want to jinx it!!), I decided that I am bigger than a cigarette, it's not going to control me. The nicotine is out of your system within a matter of days (which is why I haven't used the patch or gum - they just keep you addicted) therefore after those days you're only dealing with yourself - the psychological "addiction". If you really need something for your hands to do buy some worry beads or take up knitting. Just convince yourself that you are bigger & better than a stupid little cigarette.

I get "pangs" usually around ritual stuff, like my first cup of coffee & the morning paper & then have to remind myself that I am a non-smoker.

Has anyone noticed that they don't sleep very well after quitting? As a rule I don't sleep very much anyway but I haven't had a decent nights sleep since I quit and the most vivid dreams (which is a good thing!!).

I walked into town today and several times walked past smokers & rather than being tempted I thought, "Lord, that stinks! Did I really smell like that?!"

This is the single most hardest thing to get over when trying to stop smoking. I don't think the nicotine is what keeps people for not smoking. It is the mental part and the part that you did it with such periods of your day. it becomes your ritual thing to do. Like you get up in the morning and smoke. You drink coffee with a cig. You drive with one. You smoke right after dinner. You smoke with drinking. Once you find something esle to do while doing these things. I think it is easier. Now what to do instead of smoking is what i have a problem with!

Even still as a smoker, I hate the smell lots of the time. Like my bf lives with a couple that smokes in their house. When I walk in there I get so annoyed and hate it that I cannot stay long. Though needless to say I don't smoke at their house. hehe
