Robert Z
Of all the things that annoy me about religion, this commonly used phrase is perhaps the silliest. Some of the supporting phrases are silly as well. It was his only son? What, he couldn't have more? When people lose their son it may be the only son they have. And they can't just chose to take him back or replace him. He gave his only son? I think he took him back. That isn't giving. It should read, "He loaned his only son". He died for our sins? Okay. How many people gave up their only son so they could fight in a war? But unlike "God", they can't just make another son or take him back. They don't rise from the dead in three days or ascent to heaven. They die and get buried. So when a human loses a son, even if we buy into the nonsense of religion, the human suffers far more than a God would. One would think God's son died and was lost forever. But unlike us humans who have to deal with actual death, to a God, death means nothing. So what big sacrifice? If he even existed, Jesus didn't suffer any more than thousands of people do every day. He suffered for as few hours. Big deal. My mother suffered horribly for years. But her suffering had no purpose. It didn't come with any great reward. It was meaningless and horrific, and unfair. Like so many things with religion, I find this to be silly to the point of being offensive - perhaps because I used to believe this crap. Every parent who has lost a child has suffered more than "God" did. If you want to talk about sacrifice, consider the parents of the Sullivan brothers. They lost all five sons in a moment. And they were lost forever. They didn't rise from the depths of the ocean after three days and go home. Edited May 4, 2014 by Robert Z
somedude81
I was actually going to make a thread like this back on Easter. I was going to call it, "Why was there only one Jesus?" Since God is all powerful and made Mary pregnant, shouldn't he be able to do the same thing to a million other women?
