M30USA
Almost all the verses cited by "prosperity" preachers are from the Old Testament. There is, I admit, a certain truth to the fact that during the Old Covenant material blessings and wealth often accompanied obedience to God (as a side note there are exceptions to this). Be that as it may, if preachers are going to dig up Old Covenant theology to support their "prosperity" teaching, why don't they at least stay consistent and also teach the wrath of God upon sin like the Old Testament? They cherry pick the OT prosperity concept and ignore the rest of the OT. The reason prosperity theology existed in OT times was because God's law and truth still operated on a physical basis and hadn't been revealed on a spiritual basis yet--which we have now since Christ ushered in the New Covenant. The "new" refers to the covenant becoming spiritual, not physical. For example, instead of being circumcised in the flesh (OT), Paul talked about circumcision of the spirit (NT). This means that true blessings and prosperity in the New Covenant would be spiritual--most notably eternal life. Again I ask, if these teachers want to go back in time to Old Covenant times, why don't they remain consistent and also teach the wrath of God? They don't. In fact one hallmark trait of such teachers is they refuse to even mention sin. I find this intellectually and theologically dishonest. To operate under God's grace, we must walk by the spirit and be under the New Covenant. Remember how Scripture says that if we live under the Law (Old Testament) we remain condemned since we have broken the Law? Yet the prosperity teachers would take us BACK to the Old Covenant (the flesh covenant) where we are condemned! Does anyone else see this gaping problem?
