Anyone ever go on a juice only diet?

 

Just started one today, carrots and greens with a little ginger thrown in for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

 

Goal = 10 days.

 

Am starving but tomorrow will be better!

 

Need encouragement to get through the night without snacking!

I think a small juice fast can be good, but I didn't make twenty-four hours on broth, with bananas for snacks (for a health issue). I caved and ate a sandwich, just before going to bed, and just ate a little kashi cereal (wasn't a good idea). So, back to broth for so many hours, at least.

 

I think you should mix up your ingredients, and maybe throw in a smoothie. You can use coconut milk or almond milk, fruit, etc.

Doing a health cleanse, have done it before! Have you seen the movie or read the book, "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead?" A great movie and/or book.

 

You can get all your nutrients juicing veggies and fruits and feel great the whole time (except hungry the first day!:()

Yum, smoothie! Love the idea of coconut milk w/fruit! Thanks. LOL, know the feeling of doing great all day then caving right before bedtime.

 

So far, so good. Three carrot, organic greens and ginger juice meals today!

Based on what you wrote, there is no way you are going to get all your nutrients from carrots and greens. Not to mention that you can't possibly fill your caloric needs.

 

I am familiar with Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead and while I think it's great that he gave up a lot of crap and lost weight, he's just another diet huckster at this point.

I've done this (juice fast) from time to time and benefited greatly! :) One definitely gets all the nutrients they need during a properly conducted ten-day juice fast.

I am not a fan of this juicing craze. One thing people forget is your bodies metabolism. Don't mess it up. Skipping meals, changing your diet, etc. I'm a grazer, and since becoming one my body has changed, I'm never hungry, I can no longer eat as much in one sitting as I use to be able to, I feel better, I am more fit, more solid, etc.

 

The key to weight loss: Decrease calories slowly, reduce carbs, eat smaller meals many times a day (no more 3 square meals a day), increase your cardio activity (walk, run, yoga, weight train, bike, whatever). And EAT BREAKFAST! So many people skip breakfast, IMHO this whacks up your metabolism. Eat lots and lots and lots of fruits and veggies; organic if you can.

Show me some peer-reviewed, scientifically-conducted studies on the benefits of a juice fast over my current diet -- lean protein, healthy fats, loads of steamed veggies, minimal grains, no processed foods -- and I will happily read.

 

There are more doctors than I can count who have written a nutrition book. It's a business practice. Simply being an MD does not confer nutritional expertise. In fact, nutrition is not extensively taught in medical school.

 

But, since you want an MD's opinion, here's one speaking out against prolonged juice fasts, which is what you posted about in your OP. Glenn D. Braunstein, M.D.: "Detox Diets" and Prolonged Fasting Can Be Toxic to Your Health

I have tried juice diets before, usually for the purpose of trying to cleanse my system. The times I did try them I had trouble with fatigue and dizziness, so I had to end them sooner than I had planned. I'd like to try one again though for just a day. I have heard that drinking carrot juice is good for acne issues, so I want to try that out too since I have some trouble with it.

And why are people "cleansing" their systems? Really? Shouldn't "cleansing" be ongoing instead of every so often? Seems shocking your sytem like that would be more harmful then good.

I began juice fasting many years ago, not for weight loss and not as a fad.

 

Educated people have many different stances on this but it works well for me and the proof is in the pudding!

 

Actually, an MD really messed me up many years ago to the point where I could hardly function for a year. Couldn't even drive a car for months.

 

I then went from Dr. to Dr. (MDs) seeking help for restoration and none of them could help me without pharmaceuticals which is what messed me up in the first place! So, I went on a mission to study about recovering and maintaining good health the natural way. I've learned a lot, and studying about healthy lifestyle is now my hobby so am familiar with naysayers of different healthy habits!

 

The Dr. I now go to (an MD) also has a nutrition degree and taught it at a medical university at one time so I'm in good hands!

 

Juice fasting is just a part of what I've learned and what restored my health many years ago! I don't do it often but it's great to remove toxins from one's body and also to give the digestive system a rest.

 

I used to do a water fast one day a week and kept it up for years. Was very helpful!

 

My metabolism is great! I rarely have breakfast (since I was 20 years old) as my body doesn't want to eat for several hours after being awake, stay away from pharmaceuticals as I don't need them (most people my age take at least some and lots of people my age are on a lot of them) and look realistically 15 years younger (most people say 20 and am often mistaken for the sister of my children rather than their mom) than I am.

 

I'm finally at an age where people notice I must be doing something right and often want to know what I do to stay so young looking and fit and especially want to know what I do for my skin. I have grandchildren but no wrinkles, including no crows feet! Don't use sunscreen or make up. In fact, I put nothing on my skin except for a natural exfoliator. Beauty and fitness are the result of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, not a sporadic attempt through fads.

 

I'm a lifelong vegetarian and there was a day when people criticized me for that and said I couldn't be healthy without eating meat. We now know that's not true and I raised two college athletes who also excelled scholastically on a vegetarian diet.

 

Works for me! Sleep, exercise (have exercised for decades) fresh air and sunshine are also great components of a healthy lifestyle that have served me well! :)

 

Beginning Day 2 of my juice fast (organic carrots and greens) and am no longer hungry! Feel great! One down, nine to go!

"Cleansing" and "detoxing" are pure silliness. If vegetable juice is good for you, why not drink it every day instead of just 10 days? (I do!) I've seen lists of foods for these diets, and it's basically what I eat every day.

 

One fascinating book is Upton Sinclair's "The Fasting Cure". It's in the public domain, so you can find it all over the Web. Sinclair was one of America's most famous novelists and he advocated fasting as a cure-all for all sorts of ills. My personal (completely unscientific and unsubstantiated) hypothesis is that people feel better when fasting because they have undiagnosed food allergies, so they feel better when not eating. I think it's better to try some rotation diets and look for food allergies rather than periodically starve yourself.

I do, too! (8 oz of organic fresh-juiced carrots, greens and ginger sometimes adding apple each morning!) Great way to get a nutritive kick each day.

 

To each his own! I totally believe in fasting and have done it for decades, usually one day a week. Very simply, your body is performing many tasks at the same time. One of those is to throw off things that may hurt it. Digestion uses energy and calories and is generally a good thing to be doing! But, if you relieve your body of the task of digesting once in a while your body has more energy to devote to doing other things that will keep it healthy. I don't advocate getting fanatical about fasting. Use common sense by studying about your body and how it functions and reading a lot about fasting before you get started. From many different sources, not just one or two books or articles. Think of this, too. When you get sick you often don't want any food. Your body is letting you know naturally to stop eating so that it can concentrate on healing. And moms have always known that it's a good time to give their kids soup (liquids). Many probably don't understand why but they know it works.

 

:)Also, detoxing has helped me tremendously! There are many aids to detox other than juicing only and juicing isn't the only protocol I'm following these ten days. Our environment is full of toxins with pesticides, cleaning products, plastics, etc., around us each day and even our food sources are being sprayed with pesticides. There are ways to rid your body of some of these, not all, toxic substances.

 

Feeling good and maintaining youth takes the form of many different approaches, you can't just do one thing and expect to stay healthy. There's a thread on here about not eating a bad diet and expecting to work out and stay fit. A synergistic approach seems to work best, imho!

I do, when I can. I like juices and smoothies. I like large salads (just not all the time), soup, etc.

I like food and cooking too much to ever fast.

 

My stomach is so messed up, that I have to be careful with anything. I'm supposed to be fasting with bone broth, but I can't deal with just that. I go with whatever my body is telling me at the time. When I have no appetite, smoothies, juice, soup, are all great.

I'm trying. :) I found out what I'm dealing with, and others have dealt with doctors accusing them of being hypochondriacs, or bulimic. I'm going by what I've learned, and going by my own instincts. I saw that a few people moved to the paleo diet, and it helped them, but I'm still iffy on that diet, so am mixing and matching.

Yes, cleansing is ongoing in your system if you're eating right and not taking in too many toxins. But, with all the processed foods high in preservatives and sugars, pesticides on crops and toxins in our environment (cleaning supplies, personal care products, etc.) these days one's system can be on overload trying to get the job done. When the body doesn't have to digest food it can do a better job of removing toxins. A water fast is actually more thorough than a juice fast for this purpose but by ingesting organic juices one gets concentrated nutrients to fuel the body.

How did you get interested in "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead?"

 

Almost finished with Day 2.

 

Haven't been hungry today until now. Was hungry all day yesterday.

 

Just got off phone with friend and we talked about Thai restaurants! Yum! We also talked about raw foods as she's just finished a three week food foray of sorts. Week one was raw foods only. Week two introduced cooked veggies. Can't rem what week three was. But, no sugar, dairy or oil for three weeks. However, you could eat natural fats such as avocado, walnuts. Also, sprouted grains. Might follow up with something similar after ten days.

But, will eat cooked veggies along with raw the first week.

Far better than crapping up your system to the point of believing you need to detox it is eating right (living right?) in the first place - organic foods, loads of veggies, limited or no processed foods, natural cleaning (household and personal) supplies, regular exercise, glass food storage containers, etc.

 

Good health is not a part-time endeavor.
