Husband says I need hipper jeans!

Recommended Posts

Okay I am 42, not 22, so I like comfort over style. At 22 I could have pulled off tight things as I was quite skinny, however I am now about 35 pounds heavier than I was then. My jeans are Levi's which apparently, according to him, are "farmer jeans". You know, no fancy design on the pockets and not so tight I can't sit down in them. He told me this same thing about 3 years ago and I threw out 3 perfectly barely worn jeans because they were "farmer jeans". Oh yeah and he looks so good in his torn oil stained jeans and 1 of his 20 different black t-shirts!

He just makes me feel like crap telling me that I always need something nicer. Even when I do get something nice there's always something nicer I should get. I mean he wore plaid shorts with a plaid shirt one day and I didn't say a word even though he looked ridiculous! Even when I tell him that he does need to change he says "Oh I've got the attitude to pull this off".

Levi's aren't all that great IMO. Check out american eagle they work real well for me, they're not flashy but still "hip" lol (I'm 39)

I think you are taking an offhand comment way too close to heart. I mean.... you threw out three pairs of jeans because your husband said two words about them? Come on....

There are cute jeans for plus sized women so go shopping. My friend is a little heavy and she wears the cutest clothes.

If he truly cares for you it wouldn't matter if you were wearing a burlap sack he would still find you gorgeous.. Its one thing to make a casual comment/suggestion here and there about what he thinks you would look good in. Its quite another to make you feel bad this and self conscious about it..And to boot it doesn't sound like hes a fashion guru himself..lmao you need to set some personal boundaries imo and tell him what hes doing is upsetting you..

Also op like another poster said above me there are some cute plus size clothing options available now a days. You might want to check them out for yourself more so them him! Try lane and Bryant or fashion bug there is also Cathrine's but there stuff tends to again be some times on the matronly side.

Jeans are easy to find in the younger styles I use to even like old navy when I was on the smaller side of plus size. So take a friend and make a day of it and treat yourself just cause you gained a little weight doesn't mean you cant still look fab and be comfortable good luck..

Yeah, well he's a bit of a hypocrite. But it's also true that you could probably find stylish yet still comfortable clothes.

While it's nice when your partner enjoys your appearance, it's more concerning that you seem to have just kind of given up on yours. Appearance is not the most important thing of course, but we live in a shallow world so it does make life a little easier when you look a little better.

How about making a deal with him that if you wear some more stylish clothes he does as well, without the "attitude" excuse?

...or just wear what you like and don't worry about what he thinks. Obviously HE has no concerns about impressing you with his jeans.

Maybe it's time to adopt some of his "attitude" so you too can wear what you want.

Now if YOU would rather wear different jeans, we can talk about brands. But if you are happy in your "farmer jeans", then rock on!

It sounds like he wants to buy you some nice new clothes, why are you complaining??

It's her money too though. Maybe she doesn't want to spend it on new clothes and is content with what she has.

Someone that seriously wore a plaid shirt with plaid shorts NEVER gets to speak to ANYONE, EVER, about fashion advice! Gives me the shivers! :D

I'm not plus sized though. I am actually at the weight I should be now. I was way below my right weight until I hit my late 30s.

Just tell him you have the attitude to pull it off.

Buy new jeans if you want to. Don't let his opinions affect you so much.

Frankly - he's acting like an azzhole for criticizing, then when you heed his advice and improve, he criticizes you yet again. I hope that's not a well established behavior pattern for him.

Personally, I'd tell him to stick those jeans up his azz.

Actually I was wrong. My jeans aren't Levi's, they are Old Navy as you said you used to wear. The Levi's were the 3 pairs I threw out 3 years ago when he said THOSE looked like farmer jeans. So even Old Navy isn't good enough for him! Frankly I like the stretchy material and it is so hard to find jeans that don't feel tight and the back side doesn't slide down to show your butt crack every time you sit! If I wanted that type I'd have no problem finding stylish ones, but I want comfort for my job and just general day to day stuff.

Old Navy Flirt cut jeans. They are inexpensive, they sit slightly below the waist, which is more flattering, and they are cute for every day. Also if you have a store called CATO in your area, they have cute jeans with blingy pockets as well. Jeans that sit just below your navel actually make you look thinner than at the waist or high waisted jeans.

"Hipper" jeans?? You've got to be kidding me. What guy in his 40s (I assume) cares about that stuff?

The important thing is how your ass looks in those jeans, not the label. Tell your husband that his priorities suck.

I guess it depends on the cut. I buy the lower rise ones, and trust me, no one thinks I am wearing mom jeans ;)

And you DO have to factor in the fact that you are in your 40's. Nothing sadder than a 40 something trying to look 19

GT got me thinking maybe he is complaining because the jeans don't really showcase your bum.

There can be extra fabric in the rear.

Personally I don't like jeans with too much stretch because the don't keep thier shape.

I don't know about Old Navy. I'm in my 40's and I tried their jeans and the cut isn't very flattering. I'm with Mamasita as I get my jeans from American Eagle. Love their prices and their styles. Even their khakis are very figure flattering and of good quality.

When I was married I used to wear really baggy clothes. My ex-husband hated my high waisted and slightly baggy jeans. So, I went out and got me some skinny, more fitting jeans. Ah! He wanted to see my bum bum! Men are visual!

I know this is a really cliche lament, but buying jeans is really hard! One of the best things I ever did was walk into a store that ONLY sells jeans. (In my case, I'm partial to Lucky, but there are other higher-end ones that would do the same thing.) The staff there do nothing but stare at peoples butts in jeans all day and so they have a really good sense of what will work and what won't. Whenever I need a new pair, I basically walk in there and throw myself on their mercy. I have yet to be steered wrong.

Are you wearing mom jeans? I buy jeans with stretch and never have my ass hanging out. If you wear mom jeans I understand his complaint. Target sells jeans of all fits, maybe try there

Sounds like a legitimate reason to twist your husband's arm into taking you shopping. He has a problem with your jeans, make him help you pick out some new pairs. And dinner out.
