Thanks for the advice everyone(im a girl though)

Im just going to try and stop drinking it. Lets see how far that gets me :p. I want to try harder at the gym but I always leave about 15 mins in. maybe I can start slow..

I think most of the advice here would be helpful regardless of your gender. I've known classmates and friends who consumed more than a can a day of pop drinks. I remember a middle school teacher telling me of her struggle with sugary drinks, switching to fruity flavored water. She said it was her way of weaning off the calories and sugar altogether. I remember this clearly because she used to carry a bottle everywhere she went.

I actually had a middle school teacher with a large gut. He used to drink soda during each class period. I was saddened to hear when he passed away a few years later in my last year of high school.

Op I've been there and know exactly how you feel.

I remember when I was 17 I was drinking no less than 2 liters of diet soda every day, parent's never noticed because I immediately threw the empty bottles outside and they just assumed the bottles in the fridge were the same ones from weeks ago :p. Then again, even if they did realize my addiction they wouldn't have reacted to it because although they are loving they did have bad diets as well.

I didn't eat much but was slightly chubby and tried so many diets of which none worked. I figured that because diet coke/coke zero/dr.pepper zero/fanta zero has no calories then I was fine. That wasn't the case. There are stealth calories in soda, like a lot.

Diet sodas contain artificial sugars; although they are of no calories they amp up your cravings for sugary foods. There is an article somewhere of a lab test on mice with cakes: the normal mice casually at the cake, the mice given sugar previously quickly at the cake and the mice given aspartame previously just completely jumped & devoured the cake. Either way, sugar or artificial sugar based soda is bad.

On top of that both sweeteners and sugar screws up your metabolism. You can eat 1000 calories a day for months and do lots of exercise but you'll struggle to lose any weight if you drink soda while doing it. It just gets your body to avoid tapping into that excess fat for energy.

As a previous poster said you need to switch to something else like flavored water, don't just try to quit cold turkey. After a while start diluting the flavored water with plain or sparkling water and then over a year or so get yourself to start drinking just plain chilled water. Also try building up a habit of drinking teas and coffee to get you off the soda. Avoid juices, they are basically sugar water.

Taper off over a week, like to 3/4 can, then 1/2 can, then 1/4 can, then switch to 1/4 can ginger ale, then carbonated water then plain water.

It is an addiction, the sugar and caffeine. Affects some folks much worse than others.

Diet drinks and artificial sweeteners are much worse and toxic, avoid like the plague.

Seriously! Good luck.

Here's my suggestion:

Buy yourself a really nice crystal wine glass.

Get some sparkling water or plain soda.

Keep cranberry or other unsweetened fruit concentrate in your fridge to add a tiny bit to the sparking water. These can be bought at your local health food store.

You could also add a nice slice of orange to make it look fancy.

Ice cubes, optional.

Really spoil yourself with this healthy drink and make it a pleasant ritual for yourself.

It'll be like pampering yourself and taking a break from the stresses of life.

I love cranberry juice! Maybe I can carry that around.

Thanks!

I managed to give it up for Lent. It can be done but you do have surround yourself with alternative drinks you like.

Tell your mom you are trying to give it up & to please keep it out of the house or at least stop offering it to you.

Don't beat yourself up for an occassional slip. I went from practically a 6 pack per day to 1 can a day. I think that is progress.
