Koopa
My sister lives in Italy with her husband, and one thing I have learned that really sticks out is, people in Italy do not ask "what do you do". Instead they ask "chi sei" which means "who are you?". So what what I want to ask everybody is who are you? what does that mean to you? This is not a question of what your profession is but what who you are as a person Myself I do not know. I know what I am but that is blurred by what I think I am and what I wish I was. Is this the result of american culture?
Potz4prez
I'm the same. I have no idea who I am. It could be a product of being torn in two by the professional me, and the me me. One is the smart kid who's parents molded into a grad student... the other wants to quit school and work some **** job in a foreign country. I feel like it's a result of playing things safe, and not taking enough risks to do what your heart desires. This can apply to dating, jobs, location, friends.... everything. learning_slowly
I am a man that could be on the verge of a relationship, I have an interest in blah, blah & blah. I work in a job that pays for me to do my interests. I probably took a wrong turn and should have got a job that contained one of my interests. Maybe I still can Maybe I will. My sister lives in Italy with her husband, and one thing I have learned that really sticks out is, people in Italy do not ask "what do you do". Instead they ask "chi sei" which means "who are you?". How do they normally respond in Italy? Edited June 3, 2014 by learning_slowly to add quote

dichotomy
I am a sensitive gentle soul wrapped in a large intimidating shell of a man. I was meant to be a independent writer of wonderful and meaningful literature and stories - who instead became a technical expert and corporate executive. I am a reserved and formal community leader and middle aged family man - who secretly listens to Armin Van Buuren and wishes I could go to raves. I am a man who loves deeply but trusts no love. I am ......Dichotomy. Edited June 4, 2014 by dichotomy

littleplanet
What a fabulous thread! I am just a little planet. A small bit of spirit. (7 billions and counting) Who I am............ is all the love I've ever felt for everything I've ever loved. (got a nice little pile of that going, here.) Who I am is my grandfather's vision. (It was a wonderful vision.) Who I am is my children's lighthouse. (a very special "am" to be) Who I am is the teller of stories - that would never get told, without me. (and who I am is the listener of others' stories) Balance. Who I am is the receptacle of human passion (mine - and others'.) Who I am shows up in a lazy grin, strong hands, an artist's touch. Who I am is only teased by an ID, address, phone number, avatar. So hello out there. Very pleased to have met!

Grumpybutfun
Koopa, this is a great thread. I am a mentor, a husband, a lover, a father, a friend, a troubleshooter, a fixer, a competitor, a runner and fighter, a rock for my family, a seeker of truths, a student of life, a hunter/fisherman/rancher, and most of all, I am the choices I make everyday. I am energy and motion, a vestibule for a soul searching to become better, more, shedding my flaws and weaknesses. I am a part of something bigger, a cog in the machine, a tiny part of light in darkness. Best, Grumps
Emilia
Great thread! I am water. Sometimes flowing in the direction of least resistance with some surfance friction but often seep slowly into people's lives who aren't paying enough attention to keep me out.

learning_slowly
I'm a guy who lives in a country where the unemployment rate isn't sky high so we ask what do you do instead of who are you. But the amount of people in poverty in the USA surely means the unemployment ratio is meaningless as an example. But surely from such a highly educated position you knew that?
Author Koopa
Wow, I did not expect to get such great responses. Some of these post are literally poetry. I think these things are important, we should all work on finding out who we are and why we do what we do. So much of our culture is based on how much money we make, what we are wearing, how we look, what others think of us. However in all this it's so easy to forget that each and every one of us is unique. Striving for that ultimate goal of happiness which seems to belong to those who do not care about money, possessions, self image or other peoples opinions. So I think the most important step in finding true happiness is discovering who you are.
Tayla
Had this in my high school Social Sci class. we had fun answering it. Our teacher said, we are in the basic realm, human "beings", not Human "doings" So all that you do or don't do is a by product of "being" ,Existing. So in beginning to end cycle, Be . In Corporate america we sadly are identified with our "titles" or 'Duties". Such as I am a Mom, Sister, Freind,Or a Clerk Or a No good Rotten (insert negative words). Or judgmental terms as Slacker, -because all those are based on the "deeds". We are more then our deeds ...Which is why I answer, why I am a human being, and you are too. Welcome to humanity! M30USA
Great thread. We should be judged, as MLK said, by the content of our character. I've been told I'm elusive and hard to categorize. I've been an athlete, a musician, and a person who is obsessed with the Bible. I can be perceived as an intellectual but I also have the humor of "a two year old" (according to ex wife). I don't dress in a particular way that boxes me into a style or message. I'm like a blank slate. I like very much what Bruce Lee said about becoming like water. Water has no form, it fits into whatever container you pour it in. Water can be quiet and still, or it can destroy anything during a tsunami. Money means very little to me. As long as I can buy food, have a place to live, and take care of my kids. That's all I need. Edited June 7, 2014 by M30USA
IDK123
I am nobody. I am the experiences that have moulded me. I am the conscious effort to constantly re-mould what has already been built. I am not who I think I am. Who I really am would probably be better defined by those who know me, because often the perceptions we have of ourselves are completely different from who we really are. Often the things we do don't always match our intentions. I think when your intentions match your actions then you're coming close to who you really are. I don't know. Targetlock
reminds me of this great line from one of my favourite films: It's not who we are but what we do that defines us.
laura9
When I was younger I used to know myself as my parents' daughter. Then, in college, the girl studying x, y and z. It wasn't until graduation that I was forced to think deeper about these things. I think we're much more than a collection of experiences, successes and failures. Many of us don't even fully find ourselves for half a lifetime! And that's ok. We're dynamic beings, we change constantly. We're someone new everyday.
