Well after the holiday I've decided to work on my physique and see if I can bulk up, and will start simple with push-ups, sit ups and stretches, see if i can do anything with my skinny arms and legs. wish me luck :)

As previous poster said: squats. I'd also add deadlifts (just as important as squats if not more so for bulk), bench and shoulder press.

 

You will not gain bulk unless you start eating a lot and learn to weightlift. Push ups, sit ups and stretches will do absolute zero for your size.

All what Emilia said + (weighted due to being skinny) pullups. I already mentioned some good programs to start with.

Thanks for that it might be useful, i always suspected it might be a high metabolism or something, my dad is of a very similar size and has similar issues. i did recently get pestered by friend about seeing the doctor about it.

 

Coeliac is hereditory.

It's also a relatively simple thing to sort out.

It can be fatal and I've known of two people who passed away from it as they were unable to digest any nutrients due to the damage done and continually being done as they ate (and craved) the very things that did harm to their stomach lining.

There are a whole load of related and very varied symptoms but they're often the kind of symptoms people don't really see as abnormal and some people have barely any symptoms at all.

 

I only know as I have it myself.:)

I was relieved that my situation was a quick fix after a lifetime of the same things going on that I couldn't figure out and was never able to change.

 

Re the pestering: It could just be friends and family showing concern as opposed to pestering. People show concern when they care.

 

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. And apologies if this or my other post were seen as pestering. Neither were intended that way. :)

How old are you? I'm 33 and only now starting to appreciate being skinny because as everyone else is fattening up I'm looking "normal". Just wait a while.

 

I'm 28.

 

GemmaUk: no its not pestering its helpful advice, its pestering when people are going like 'maybe you should eat more?' 'have you seen a doctor?' and constantly putting food in front of me, its not really helpful when they do that.

Okay so I stood up for myself at work when someone made a jab against my skinniness, I told them it wasn't my fault I'm this skinny and with my high metabolism I have trouble putting on weight and have little control over it and don't appreciate being pestered about it, that shut them up ;)

Always Pondering

I remember being really skinny and I was considered underweight according to my BMI at that time. Trust me, I was eating a lot (what I thought was a lot at the time) but never gained weight. The younger female friends I had at the time even jokingly said they would beat me up or pick me up or something. I got really sick of it so I decided to actually do something about it.

 

I started lifting weights and having a calorie surplus (eating healthy foods). I paid more attention to fitness and made it my goal to develop more muscle mass and gain weight. I am now considered in the normal weight range and I have very nicely developed muscles. :) The calisthenics that I tried at the time didn't help much unless I added additional weight in some way. Oh, I also take a protein shake 1-2 times a day. It has around 800 calories, 85g of carbohydrates, and about 60g of protein all per serving. That helps me too.

I will see what i can do, i used to be okay with my skinniness until people started pestering me all the time about and it and made me feel bad about it. but yeah i would like to do something about my arms and legs mainly, don't like how bony they look all the time.

I'm a little late but I wanted to write down some advice because skinnyness has been a problem for me all my life. I'm 6'1 and have weighed anywhere from 130lbs when I was sick and depressed to 180lbs when I consistently lifted weights for 9 months. Unfortunately I didn't stick with the weight lifting + diet and am now back to my usual 145 - 150lbs. So trust me, it is very possible to build up size. It is also possible to loose it all! Lol.

 

The problem is that most people want quick results. Not going to happen. To gain weight and size is an expensive, slow, and hard process. Expensive because you will need to eat a **** ton of food. Slow because I didn't even notice any progress until about month 3. Hard because to get results you need to be consistent and workout regularly and you need to eat regularly. There were times where my stomach was so full that all I wanted to do was puke.

 

However, if you stick with it, the results of gaining size are amazing. It is a huuugggee confidence and self-esteem booster. Yes, it helps with the ladies. People take you more seriously. Your health and endurance go up. Overall you just feel better about yourself and your body.

 

Some of the things that have helped me:

 

1. Shakes. I am a slow eater and when you have to eat 5 - 6 meals a day, drinking shakes is a time saver. 800 calories in a cup that you can drink in about 5 minutes. You can't beat that. I wasn't a huge calorie counter so most of the time I would drink 2-3 shakes and eat three big meals per day.

 

2. While you can gain size from doing body only exercises I prefer weights. You don't need to be doing any fancy exercise. Stick to the usual compound movements - squats (front and back), bench press (barbell and dumbbell), shoulder press (again barbell and dumbbell), rows (barbell and dumbell), and etc. Obviously there are more but those the big four.

 

3. Interval training - these are short, high intensity exercises. Sprints are a great example. You sprint as hard as you can for 30 seconds and then rest for a few minutes. Repeat several times. By the end you can barely stand up. Great for keeping down the fat, increasing endurance, and building muscle.

 

I'm going to stop there because I could write pages on this stuff. Hopefully some of this helps you.

Thanks i'm suddenly not bothered about my weight issues anymore thanks to the great lady i'm seeing, though i don't know what she thinks of me physically yet, she is a bit shy about this sort of thing :) but i may try and improve my appearance for her though ;) nothing wrong with a bit of fine tuning lol.

New lady. good one. How you meet?

If you were really happy with your wight and it was just people's comments that got to you, then I guess you don't need to worry about the gym. I still think it would help with your self esteem though, and for improving your desirability, from a long term perspective, so don't totally write it off.

But seriously. Since you posted about the skinnyness, there is no way out. You better go squatting now............... woman or not

Thanks i have a thread on the in search of forum with all the details :D and yes i have been on a date with her, hopefully the first of many :love:
