Eternal Sunshine
My cold has progressed to a cough and I was up coughing most of last night. As a result I felt like s.... at work and was meaning to pick up some cough suryp but things got hectic and I didn't get a chance. It's now close to 10pm and my coughing is becoming unbearable as soon as I lie down. Any tips?
ja123
Gargle with organic apple cider vinegar (and you can swallow it). General cold/flu remedy from my grandmother: cup of ginger ale heated piping hot and stirred flat, add a heaping tablespoon of honey. Make sure you're well dressed in several layers of t-shirts, pjs, turtle neck, sweats, etc and drink it while hot. Go to bed right away with lots of covers and sweat it out. Babolat
I have been dealing with a crazy cough and sinus bug, had a bad sore throat too. What ja123 says. I like to use Echinacea and add drops to boiling water, put a towl over my head, head over the pot, and breath in the steam. Sleep with her head propped up on some pillows too. I have been using these products too with a lot of success: https://www.boironusa.com/products/sinusalia/ On the non homeopathic front, Delsym cough suppressent is good and so is Mucinex. writergal
Doctor visit and antibiotics? I had walking pneumonia for nearly 3 months this spring and a persistent chest cough that kept me awake most nights even though I used honey during the day. I tried antibiotics to no avail. It was nasty. If you haven't taken any work off yet ES then I think you may want to at least take a few days off to rest. The more you stress your body the more the cough and whatever virus you have will linger. I think if you take some cough syrup at night that causes drowsiness at least you'll be able to get 8 hours of sleep without coughing. Honey in tea helps during the day, so does apple cider vinegar (diluted in water, not straight up). Honey is a natural cough suppressant. 1-2 tablespoons in hot water and that will suppress your cough during the day. Has worked for me.

Ruby Slippers
Chop up a few cloves of garlic, and mix the garlic into about a quarter to a third cup of honey. Let it sit for an hour or two, then eat a teaspoon of the mixture. Wait and see how your stomach reacts. Raw garlic can affect some more than others. If no ill effects, take as needed. It's anti-viral and anti-bacterial. It's my mom's home remedy for colds and sore throat, and it works great for me.

yajiuma
I've just recently recovered from a bad cold -lots of night coughing. What really helped get rid of the lingering cough was pineapple juice. Apparently it contains bromelain which is anti-inflammatory, it soothes your throat and thins the mucus. I just happened to have purchased a box of 100% canned pineapple juice and after drinking it noticed a great improvement. After researching online I discovered how it is extremely beneficial in aiding your body to recover from colds.
spiderowl
If you are sure this is just a cold turning into a cough, then some things you can do are to: - lie on your stomach at night - for some reason this can move things around a bit in lungs and ease the cough enough to get off to sleep. Sleep itself is a great healer and really helps until the cough goes; - if you have a partner, or family member, around, they could do some physiotherapy exercises like you lie on your stomach and they 'beat' up and down the back from the waist upwards (gently but hard enough to make a hollow sound) and this dislodges the flem in the lungs and again can give you enough of a break from coughing to get some sleep. I've found both of these help. If you've had the cough a long time though or it's not connected to a recent cold, then best to see your doctor.

One thing to bear in mind is not to overdo drinking pineapple juice. It has an enzyme in it that can, over a period of time, dissolve gums. Apparently, Japanese soldiers in WWII who hid or got lost in the jungle for months on end were found to have lost teeth as a result of eating too much pineapple. It probably takes a lot of pineapple to get to this point, but something to be aware of!

I don't normally buy/drink pineapple juice, but for some reason I bought a box on sale that coincided with my cold. Next time I stock up I'll keep in mind not to go overboard. You could try hot water with lemon and honey. One is never too busy to take 5 minutes to go the store and get cough meds.
Babolat
Great post! I actually started one simialr a while back when I was sick. I decided staying out to celebrate my birthday, drinking until 2AM, smoking a couple of cigarettes on Saturday night, would be a great idea for this bug I have Not! I feel like I relapsed today, sore throat is back, coughing is back, not as bad though. I like Rubys garlic coment a lot. I have read this yet I have not tried it. I am taking a garlic supplement though. I add raw local honey every day to organic tea. That does help. wrtiergals apple coder vinegar suggestion is a good one..dilute it in water though. I use it for an upset stomach too. I avoid meds as much as I can as I do believe our bodies can fight off most things with a little homeopathic/herb/supplment help, and rest, lots of rest. Go to your local natural health/food store. The folks there are usually great at recommending good stuff. Edited June 16, 2014 by Babolat
Author Eternal Sunshine
Since I work with medical researchers who are often doctors, I saw one that's wearing a stetoscope and asked him to listen to my lungs. He seemed a bit weirded out but obliged. He says no pneumonia and also looked at my tonsils which he said are fine. His diagnosis was a cold virus. Thanks for the home remedies guys, I actually tried a few and got some sleep. Coughing seems to be easing now, thank god.
