A man's sense of humor

Recommended Posts

A well-developed sense of humor is supposed to be one of the things women find attractive in men. It makes sense, I don't know of any woman who'd want to be with a guy who's a sad sack or is angry all the time.

But I'm living proof that it sometimes has the opposite effect. I've had a few instances where women thought I was funny when I was serious.

I'm the first one to admit I have a very dry sense of humor... I laugh at things most people don't find funny (i.e., people behaving stupidly), and I fail to see the humor in things others may find hilarious (i.e., someone hurts themselves or breaks some prized possession). I don't like schadenfreude, but I've yet to meet a woman who doesn't have it and doesn't find it funny when people get hurt or break things.

Maybe a lot of other guys out there are in the same situation I'm in... maybe that's why there aren't many threads on LS about a man's sense of humor in attracting women... :(

I would say my sense of humour is a mix of witty, dry and sarcastic. I'm not goofy, and I don't really tell jokes. Women that like goofy, joke telling guys, generally would not be attracted to me.

I'd also say my sense of humour plus my intelligence are the main things that attract women for me. I'm on the short side, average looks, and have a very average income. But I've never had any problems attracting women - mostly due to my sense of humour.

It could be something to do with the women you are meeting. Do they come from the same background as you?

If not, compromises will need to be made by both parties. There's probably things you do that they dislike?

I typically find that my wit goes over the head of your average girl, and she's just left looking dumb. No one likes to look dumb.

Just makes it all that better when you DO find a girl that gets your sense of humor :D

Hi El Brujo, I always thought that since women were (sigh) stereotypically empathic we naturally DON'T laugh at pain or destruction. I mean, my small sample of female friends universally dislikes the Three Stooges/Jerry Lewis & even some Jim Carrey: all physical, painful comedy. We can see how bad/embarrassing stuff might happen to us, so we feel for the person who's suffering it. Now, reading about some celebrity bhotch's man cheating on her or a photo in a tabloid about a famous person's weight gain or horrible outfit, that's different. What else are we going to do while standing in line to buy our feminine products at the drug store? :o

Maybe your female friends are laughing out of nervous fear that whatever the subject is might happen to them?

I'm really into MST3K, Rifftrax and movie riffing. I tend to go toward observational humor, sarcasm, or just plain silly. I cried hard when George Carlin died.

It is so hard for me to find a man with similar humor. I'll quote something from Monty Python and most men just give me a blank stare.

sigh.....

OP - I am one of those women who actually does appreciate your sense of humor. Unfortunately I'm in the same boat as you - I find way too many men like their humor goofy or, you know, bathroom. (Sigh). I wish I could meet a man who likes their humor dark or "a little out there." I hate, hate, hate slapstick.

The main thing is finding someone who gets and shares your humor. If you can find someone who can match you, all the better!

I don't like humor making fun of other people. I also don't like toilet humor, or extreme crudeness. But just about anything else goes.

In men, I appreciate over-the-top jokers, as well as quiet guys who make subtle sarcastic jokes. But the #1 thing? Someone who laughs at MY jokes. :D

Like you said, the main thing is that he is not a sad sack or angry. Nobody wants to be around that.

I would just make the comment that I've met lots of guys who thought they were funny and maybe their guy friends thought they were funny but their humor was mostly insults and mostly on women, and then when a woman doesn't think that kind of disrespect and usually misogynistic crap is funny, they further deprecate her for having a stick up her you know what.

Humor is best when it doesn't resemble a frontal assault on another person.

Well, poking fun of people who do stupid things, or people who are naturally stupid, definitely doesn't fly with women (except for my former co-worker Vicki, who was mean to stupids)... to women, you're supposed to feel sorry for stupids, not make fun of them.

May I ask how old you are and/or how old are the women you're dating?

I for one do NOT find schadenfreude funny at all. In fact, I think it over exposure can actually desensitize society especially young people. My teenage son will sometimes show me things like this on Vine or some other social media channel and I am appalled more often than not by what people find funny these days. And this is coming from a woman who couldn't be further from being prudish AND I have an awesome sense of ha ha myself!:cool:

Regardless, I'm surprised that you CAN'T find a woman that doesn't find schadenfreude funny because I actually don't know any woman, at least 35+ that does. Perhaps it's an age or generational thing? Not sure.

Hang tight hun. I think you're more normal than you think :)
