tiki
I work for a doctor. My brother-in-law (sister's husband) has been seen here before and b*tched about his bill, we had a big blow-out and FINALLY got it straightened out after some time. He didn't want to pay his bill...whatever. He came back in recently, which I wasn't fond of....but whatever. He sees the doc and the doc tells me not to bill him b/c he's my BIL. His charges come up to $345.00. He walks out with a pair of shoe inserts (that cost US money to purchase). Anyway, I get his EOB from BC/BS and he owes like $288.00 toward his deductible and the rest is a write off. Read: We didn't get paid a penny. Now the doctor told me not to bill him, which is totally illegal, especially when it comes to a deductible. And it's my BIL, so I guess he thinks he gets all the extras. He's the freakin STORE MANAGER at our local wal-mart ($$$) and can't even get me a f*ckin 10% discount on a large product -- whatever. So he owes it. I don't know what to do. Doc says don't bill it. Should I even bring it up to the doc? I'm afraid it's gonna rehash some old memories of where he bitched that last time. But he could atleast pay some, atleast to cover the cost of the inserts. But my sister is so nice. And they have us over, sh*t like that. She buys my son nice birthday, Christmas presents, etc. Our families mesh well. Why do I feel like families will f*ck ya over more than anyone?! Our doc asked him last year for a donation from wal-mart for the arthritis foundation (doc's son has juvenille RA) - he said he already had commitments. Why does he want his back scratched but doesn't want to scratch anyone elses? I don't know what to do? Ignore it? Tell the doc? AAAARGH!!!!
Naive
I think that you should talk to the doctor and tell him thanks but no thanks. Your brother in law has to do what is right!!! If he would not do the same thing for you why should you for him???? Sure that's your sister's hubby but he should not be such a tight a** and he should pay what he owes!!! As a men it's his job to do what's necessary to be responsible as well as to bring home money and pay his bills that he owes for a reason!!!!
Moose
If the Doc says don't bill him, don't. If something comes up later, you'll have the luxury of saying you were told not to. Everything will catch up to your BIL, you of all peeps should know that.
Author tiki
Yeah, the sad thing is was that I was b*tching about this to the doc about another patient recently, a friend of a referring doc's and he was like "noooo...we can't write it off, that's illegal". And here's my BIL getting sh*t written off, when I go and bitch on every other person he writes stuff off for. I'm so confused. I feel like a hypocrite.
Naive
The doctor is probably doing it as a favor for you, maybe you should explain to him that he is not doing you a favor and that he is jeopardizing himself and you.
Author tiki
True. Another thing is that BIL got the EOB (explanation of benefits) from BC/BS at home, as do all BC/BS members. So he knows he owes the $$$. I just feel bad thinking of my sis, not my BIL though.

AAAARGH!!!! he is aware of his deductible and needs to pay it for prof svcs rendered. he still will save $ even after paying the deductible. If Blue+ by chance chooses YOUR doc to audit this year then he better have evidence that he tried to collect the decuctible. stay legal esp with insurance companies cause they will f*** you with their team of highly paid lawyers and business types. Like I told you before, he has to be a man and do the honorable thing. What if you did not work at the doctor's office he would have to pay, right??? He is not going to die over paying what he owes. About your sister, I am sure she will understand that it's the right thing to do. I am sure they are not going to go bankrupt over this plus it's your BIL's responsibility, that is why he works and he has to be aware that there are times when there are unexpected expenses and they have to be paid. He went to the doctor knowing he had to pay and it's probably not going to matter because he did not go there with the idea of not paying.
