Michael 93
Has anyone come across / used this method before? I struggle to see how by using therapy your trouble seem to drift away? Brilliant if this is the case but I would like a bit more clarification on whether this is right? Thanks
erklat
I used EFT tapping. I think it helped me, and is free. Although I have been improving myself every day with new things so I can't exactly tell what brought the most benefit to me, but it is more than obvious I am an emotional wreck no longer.
d0nnivain
CBT involves being aware of your thoughts & redirecting the negative ones to a more positive place. When you find yourself thinking that you will never get a new relationship because your old one ended, stop. Acknowledge that is a negative thought. Replace it with a more realistic one like Just because one person wasn't my true love doesn't mean I will never find that person. I just have to keep looking. I am a good person.
Chi townD
Has anyone come across / used this method before? I struggle to see how by using therapy your trouble seem to drift away? Brilliant if this is the case but I would like a bit more clarification on whether this is right? Thanks Yeah, YOU HAVE! Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is more hands on therapy with a lot more involvement with the therapist with a lot of homework for the patient. It's exploring patterns that lead to destructive thoughts and behaviors. So they modify these thoughts of worthlessness by changing the behaviors that are thought to cause these feelings. So, if you have someone that is depressed brought on by....oh, I don't know, like being dumped! Then patients are encouraged to schedule positive activities throughout their week that they find pleasurable or MAY find pleasurable. Therefore, the patient learns or changes his or her brain patterns more to the positive because they are in a positive and pleasurable environment. They're in a positive environment and doing fun and pleasurable activities; therefore, they start to look at the world less negatively. Kind of like when I say, "Start making positive changes in your life"? Or when we say, stay busy? Fill your schedule up with fun things to do? Get a new hobby? Shopping for new clothes? Join a group or a club? Interact with new people? Travel? You're kind of already receiving CBT therapy.
KathyM
Studies show that CBT is the most effective form of therapy for the widest variety of issues. It involves following up negative thoughts with identifying the cognitive distortion that is usually accompanying the negative thought, and following it up with a more positive, less distorted thought. Such as using a thought that "I will never find a girlfriend", identifying the distortion (in this case several distortions: fortune telling, black and white thinking, overgeneralization, magnification), and then following it up with a more realistic, less distorted thought, such as "I will keep working on my social skills, and will practice putting myself in social situations where I can meet people. There are many other ways of using CBT, many other strategies that CBT uses to challenge negative thinking or distorted thinking.

Kathy gave a GREAT explanation into what CBT is and the work the patient has to do. But, I highlighted the area where Kathy says the patient should say to themselves that they will improve their social skills and putting themselves out there. The thing is, the patient can SAY these things to themselves, they also have to DO the things that they promised themselves that they would do. Great explanation. Love it.

Love it.That's where the behavioral part of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) comes in. Changing behaviors from negative/self defeating, to positive. The cognitive part involves changing your thinking from negative to more realistic or more positive, and the behavioral part involves actually doing things to make a positive change.

Thank you for sharing that. I used it... sometimes. I guess it helps. Part of the problem, for me at least, is that I know how it works, so it's like watching a magic trick when you know the illusion. Still. It has merits. I even created an online form for myself, as everything else I'd seen required writing them by hand. Not gonna happen
KathyM
Usually, clients are encouraged to write down their negative thoughts, write down the cognitive distortion involved, and beside it write down the more positive, less distorted thought beside it, but I realize that's not always practical to write it down, so I also encourage clients to mentally do the process when they are not able to write it down. When a negative thought occurs, mentally identify the cognitive distortion, in this case fortune telling, etc., and then follow it up with a more positive thought. There are a lot of other cognitive techniques that are taught to the client also to challenge their negative thoughts.
Mcnulty
It's the most recognized way forward think the medical profession in my country. Why? My counselling lecturers have said because it's the quickest...make of this what you will. Personally speaking, it didn't work for me, I was I felt too depressed to do 'the work' holistically. Trying to halt/change my NATS - negative automatic thoughts was really hard for me to do at that time. NB: this is just from my personal experience. I would not dismiss any sort of holistic therapy until you try it, good luck.
FitChick
A waste of time and money. I finally found a much better type of therapy that worked very quickly and gave me tools I can use daily if I need them.
AnneT1985
CBT is a wonderful tool, especially for depression and anxiety issues. You don't need to spend money...even research it online or buy a book. It's a very scientific method of challenging your thoughts that anyone can do. I highly recommend it.
