Conceited, Narcissistic, or healthy self-Esteem?

Recommended Posts

Okay, folks time to get personal!

I was talking with a friend of mine today at work, I asked him how he felt about himself and why. He said,

" I think I'm a really stong person, I have incredible coping skils, my ability to forgive is second to none, and the ease with which I behave compassionately without expectation of reciprocation is above par by an entire round.

Now, >I< think I'm also very humble, flexible and easy to talk with. I don't think I'm overbearing or mean.

On top of ALL this I'm damn sexy, soaking wet, can perform like a champ in the sack and have the uncanny ability to cu......." I'll stop there. These weren't his exact words, and he went on to other areas of is personality, of course.

To what degree would you describe this self-image? Narcissistic? Conceited? or just a good solid self-esteem.

Do people actually feel this way about themselves? What say you , O' oracles of the Shizzack?

HMMM well, that's a tough one...I can't say Narcassisst yet. I know one and yeah they are cocky smartasses and think that they're all that. Maybe abit of trait of one?? Sounds more like over confidence and abit conceited. IS your friend nasty at all?? Can turn it on and off like a light bulb?

My friend who is one, well I can't actually 100% say he IS one all the way- but he definately has traits and the selfishness ME ME and ME attitude is a dead giveaway. BUT, in saying that he's always been kind to me. I've never really pissed him off...I have no reason to.

How does your friend feel about the people around him? How does he treat them? Need some more info to actually really analyze him...But right now from what you said I'd say just really confident and secure. Who knows if he's THAT good at C.....I'll stop there.... :p

Nah, he's actually a really nice guy, soft spoken, married, two kids. I personally think he's really well put together, but I guess I just wanna know what is "Normal" out there.

I notice some of the same "traits" in me, I guess that's why we get along so well.

He treats everyone very well, and has a great deal of patience. We talk often like this so I'm kinda asking about me as well, I guess. :)

BTW, he's FAR less outspoken that I am.

Then I would say alot of self confidence and he's a happy person. Good energy and fun to be around. An all around good guy. Friends who compliment eachother and bring out the best in eachother are great to have in your life!!

Either he's really all those things, and brutally honest, too, or he's conceited.

Narcissism, though, to me - is a lot more serious and also reflects on how they treat other people - usually with thoughtlessness. You know, they have a sense of entitlement, require admiration, someone that takes advantage of others, lacks empathy. Someone who's really arrogant but in a baseless way.

Hrm. I know a few people like that.

well you DID ask him to TOOT his own horn.

maybe his opinion of himself is quite high, and thats why he was so embelished.

i would think a humbler person- may not list quite soo many things, and keep detail to a minimum.

We were actually having this discussion because of my separation. He was commending me on my progress, and I told him that I was modelling some of my behavior after his. We got to talking about this self-esteem thing. It was pretty open and amazingly honest.

He's one of my best friends.

But I never knew this about him. I was kinda surprised.

he has good self esteem and will most likely do well with the ladies. It is better to think too highly of yourself than too low of yourself.

as you go along in life you will learn that no one looks out for yourself than yourself....so make yourself #1.

in additoion, few people will toot your horn for you, you also need to do that for yourself.

unless you elaborate more about your friend personality wise -

i'd label him as sold good self-esteem for now. sounds like he's a radiant guy and has good positive thoughts.

in terms of narcissism, there's more to it than you know, a lot more in depth stuff...i know um..well cause i used to be...*cough*

Monkey,

Thanks that helps. While I'm NO expert in the diagnosis, I do know that we all have narcissistic streaks.

It would be very helpful if you started a thread about what narcissism is, and the realities of the situation.

Oh can I get you something for that cough? :D

" I think I'm a really stong person, I have incredible coping skils, my ability to forgive is second to none, and the ease with which I behave compassionately without expectation of reciprocation is above par by an entire round."

If he had said things such as, 'Everyone comes to me for advice because I always have the answers.' or 'people always want to be my friend because I attract all the women' 'I'm known as intelligent, fun, exciting.' I think those kind of statements denote one who is truly on an ego trip, but this guy is more solid, more genuine, and I would guess he probably is exactly as he described.
