Stay_Gold
Any one here drink skim or fat free milk...??? Does it taste like water...?? Currently I am drinking 2% milk. I LOVE milk so much I have a cup a day sometimes even more. Its something I have always loved and need/crave it most times. But....I know that saturated fat is bad for you and a lot of my daily saturated fat intake comes from milk, eggs, oils, meats and some processed foods. I want to make the switch to skim/fat free milk. I am fearful I will not like the taste and revert back to 2%. Are there brands of fat free that have the texture and taste of 2% or whole...?? I might just have to switch over to soy or almond milk. Thanks.
deathandtaxes
One cup a day? Stick to your 2%.
amaysngrace
I only drink organic skim and it's okay tasting. But it costs a little more than non-organic...a gallon is $6.49 where I live.
gaius
Don't bother with skim milk. It's like white water almost. If you really have to cut down on milk related calories just have a smaller glass everyday instead.
thefooloftheyear
Gallon of skim milk a day....Dont mind the taste..I actually like it..I dont drink any soft drink, coffee or fruit juice..Occasionally some tea.. BTW, not all saturated fat is considered bad..That was a myth... TFY
CarrieT
Consider the extra money and buy Horizon milk. I did a taste test with my stepson who "hates 2%" milk and when I proved to him that Horizon's 2% tastes as good as the whole milk he was accostomed to, he relented.
MuddyFootprints
Stick with 2%, despite the fat free hype.
Smilecharmer
I think skim is gross. I can't drink anything but whole. I would rather bike for an extra twenty minutes than give it up.
Always Pondering
I would just stick with the 2%. I take a cup a day or sometimes more depending on if I take my protein shake once or twice that day (I mix it with 2% milk). The taste of skim milk is very watery to me, I don't really like it. It's not as bad as Diet Coke versus Coke in terms of Soda (back when I drank soda) but I just don't like the taste at all of skim. A couple of my friends love skim though. Imported
I don't really drink milk that much anymore, but i use to drink probably a half-gallon to a gallon a day. Once I got use to fatfree milk, 2% tasted like creamer and whole milk.....YUCK!!!! Can't believe anyone actually likes whole milk.
Noproblem
Different brands, different tastes Try many until you found the one that tastes good
Bruce Leigh
Ha ha I can relate to this, just switched myself from semi skimmed to skimmed. Started out with having it in my tea, got used to the taste of it through tea to a certain extent. Now I like having a glass of skimmed where as before I couldn't even drink the stuff. Next step will be to try it with some cereal.
FitChick
Even as a child I hated drinking any type of milk. Now I love almond milk, plain or flavored.
Haydn
Full fat, a few pints perfect just before a night on the sauce.
Imported
Just got a couple gallons of fatfree milk from Costco. Had a half cup, tasted really creamy. Had to check the label again to make sure it wasn't whole fat. Dunno why people think fatfree milk is watery.
Tayla
Soy milk, coconut milk, almond milk, rice milk seem to be alternate choices. Try acidopholis milk. I have zero flavor happiness when drinking skim milk. I get my calcium and Vitamin d thru other sources. (although certain cheeses are still my quick fix to get diary into the diet.)
lollipopspot
I second trying coconut (or other) milk. If you have a Trader Joe's near you, they have very good prices on plant milks. I'm not a fan of the taste of soy or rice milks - almond is good though - but everyone is different. You can also make your own plant milks fairly easily.
Els
I drink skim milk most of the time - doesn't affect the taste TOO much. I'd be lying if I said it tastes as good as full cream milk (it doesn't), but I'd rather save the calories on milk (and use it for something else that I'm craving).
sillyanswer
But....I know that saturated fat is bad for you and a lot of my daily saturated fat intake comes from milk, eggs, oils, meats and some processed foods. I think the issue is that too much saturated fat is bad for you, not that it's bad in an absolute sense. Something to do with links to elevated cholesterol in your blood. Have you had your cholesterol levels checked? Anyway, yes, skimmed milk tastes of water. I thought that even semi-skimmed (2%) milk tasted of water back when all I drank was full-fat milk (4%) but after a few months of switching to 2% I was happy with it. I'm sure I'd get used to skimmed milk after a while if that's all I drank.
newmoon
i used to be a devoted 2% milk drinker and eventually switched to soy (for the long expiration) and now almond milk. 1% was ok, but skim was gross, especially in cereal. i couldn't do skim anymore. soy/almond have a much better taste texture if you're used to 2% imo, and much fewer calories, less sugar, etc.
pink_sugar
2% is a lot better than skim milk. I honestly prefer soy milk or almond milk to regular milk as it has just as much flavor, but less calories and fat.

What I highlighted, and make sure it's lactose free too. Period
bubbaganoosh
I tried that fat free almond milk. Not too bad. Less calories then skim milk too.
Els
I've tried almond milk and soy milk - both taste terrible to me. It isn't just because I'm used to cow's milk either - soy milk was actually more common where I come from and my mother constantly tried to feed it to me as a kid. God it was awful. I do like goat's milk, but not much chance of getting that on a regular basis. Coconut milk (also known as santan) is not an alternative to milk IMO. It has a very rich taste and is high in saturated fat, much higher than cow's milk. It's excellent for use in curries, which is its primary use in Asia. I love it, but it's extremely calorie dense. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coconut_milk#Health_effects Edited August 8, 2014 by Elswyth
