Giving up a seat on the subway scared me this time.

Recommended Posts

I'm posting this because I believe it deserves consideration. And this was posted on a friend's FB feed - and I would add, significantly, that he's Male, works in this industry, but has also a high-power position in a prominent American company:

A very good (male) friend posted this on his feed, with his own comment:

"Extremely thought-provoking and very important to read. Sexism and male privilege still rules the day in the video game industry, but the experiences and commentary in this article are far more wide-reaching than just one industry."

One might say, "Read it and weep".....

I was raised to be first when you see a senior, pregnant lady, disabled or anyone who is in relative need of support on the subway.

Well, the reality of giving it up for a holocaust survivor reminded me that this old guy was near to my grandpa's age. When you see the tattoo you almost hope that it's a dream. It's not. That's the scary part because nothing used by modern imagery can tell exactly what they went through. His are the true stories.

Anyone on LS with me about being first to give a helping hand no matter what? I think it is lacking in kids today.

I'm always toward the back so I don't have to do it often u know.

You're a man, aren't you? Ever tried being a woman and getting respect in the workplace because you have to earn it? Have you any idea how hard women have to work to achieve the same respect that men get - for doing the same job? Please, until you have been there, (and I have been in both situations - that is, I have been respected for my work, but also DIS-Respected, purely on Gender grounds) don't tell me 'respect is earned. That's just utter bull.

It's the UTTER truth according to most in this society. BTW, last I heard women have closed the gap significantly and in some cases surpassed men in terms of salary amount.

Goes both ways.

Oh is that a fact?

I have my doubts:

I'd be very happy to see the links supporting your statement, in such wide and general terms. Thank you.

gave up his seat to a woman. I doubt it was staged as he's been seen riding the subway many times and has a reputation for politeness, probably because he's Canadian.

He is one of the most unassuming, modest un-star-like people on the planet. His life is extraordinary by being so very ordinary. He always rides the subway, and to say he never 'makes a fuss' is an understatement. It's how he chooses to do it. Good for him.

Gender pay gap: The familiar line that ?women make 77 cents to every man?s dollar? simply isn?t accurate.

Slate is the only source you need on most things. :D

I never give up my seat for anyone unless it's obvious they're feeble or downright handicapped. Besides, the green line is usually so packed it's impossible to give your seat up to anyone except the person in front of you with their butt in your face.

I'm not very tall. There is only one thing worse than someone's butt in your face, and that is someone's armpit literally inches from your nose... and I'm talking 'inches' in single figures....

I absolutely believe chivalry is dead and to experience or see it in this day and age is refreshing. I think in this modern era, especially with youth, the sense of entitlement supersedes the spirit of generosity.

I'm a woman and go out of my way to help others regardless if they're a woman, man, young or old. It's just the right thing to do.

I don't expect others to do the same but when it does happen it warms my heart.
