a money thing

so, my friend and i are going to a taping of the price is right game show. my friend calls me and says that we should discuss what happens if one of us happens to get picked... that we split any winnings 50/50 because we are there as a team. i said no, this is not a team sport, we're just sitting together in the audience as friends, and i wouldn't split anything i win and am not obligated to. we're fighting really awful about a hypothetical "if we get picked" scenario, but he wants it settled beforehand that we'll split anything 50/50. i say no way, no reason to split. thoughts???

This argument...my god! The cart is so far before the horse they're not even in the same zip code. Anyway, moving on... No, I wouldn't split it or even give him a share unless getting the tickets was somehow his doing. I don't understand why he thinks otherwise. And besides, what if you win a brraaannd neeeeeewww carrrr!! The hell are you supposed to do then? Share custody? Gtfoh !

I mean seriously though, setting aside your slim chances of getting on in the first place, the prizes are huge sums of money and you still have to pay taxes on it so if he expects something after all that...wow.

What do you care about more: your hypothetical unlikely winnings or your friend?

If you agree to his proposal, you increase your chances of getting something while your every man for himself attitude may cost you a friendship.

I would ask your friend how he would envision splitting the car. Somebody has to pay the taxes on it etc. But let's say it's a $30,000 car do either of you have $15,000 to pay the other one? Doesn't sound like much of a win then. Just saying.

No. For one thing, without a contract, he could back out and just stiff you. Mostly it's prizes on that show, not money. So it's a ridiculous notion. I say instead you say, No, not practical. But I tell you what, if I clear over $4000, I'll buy you that new Xbox you've been wanting (or something a couple hundred dollars).

lol wtf, where did your friend even get this idea that you should split any hypothetical winnings? most of the prizes aren't even cash so what does he have in mind? selling the stuff? I'd say "no but if I win big, drinks are on me afterwards"

Ditto to everything about this. Also...

Whoops, meant to say 'the prizes aren't huge sums of money...'

The thought would never occur to me to ask to split any winnings with someone I went with to the show! Or think the person would want me to split it with them. If anything, I'd be like take me out for dinner, or something along those lines.

Is this 'friend' just a friend or is there something more going on?

nope. just a friend. but obviously very diverse views on this. i was like WTF? it saps all the joy from going really, knowing someone is not there for the fun, but for an end result that may not even happen! why fight now??!! i thought maybe i was being unrealistic, but my friend is whack on this. not sure why... unless it's a ploy to get out of going somehow

I've always split winnings over $100 if I'm gaming with a friend. If it's more than one friend, the winner gets half and the rest split the other half.

The same goes if I were ever to be gifted a winning lottery ticket. The person who gave it to me would get half.
