fatty
Hello, Here is my situation. I need to know how I can keep my immune system healthy and good. Recently(over the past couple of years) I keep on getting sick through all the seasons. The sickness is not ongoing only happens for about 2 weeks then i feel good but then i get sick again couple of months after. I dont understand why though, out of everybody in my family I am the only one that gets sick, My dad is 48 and he has never been sick for the past 5 or 6 years and that is crazy. I want to know how I can make my immune system healthy. I will admin I am a bit overwiehgt I am about 250 lbs and my age is 20. I dont know what to do, Does my eating effect the way my body can protect it self/ what should i do to keep my body stronger and not get sick all the time. Also another thing I have noticed that it takes me alot longer to recooperate from my sickness in comparison to my brothers/freinds/family. It takes maybe a day or 2 to feel better but for me it will take about a week and my symptoms get worse untill the doctor prescribes me penecillin like always. As for my brothers/freinds, they take simple medicine go to bed and feel fine the next day. I dont know what is wrong and how/what steps I can take to fix this? Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you in advance for replying to my topic
moimeme
First of all, if you haven't had a checkup with your doc recently, do so. You could have some low-grade infection or some other condition that is affecting your immunity. Does my eating effect the way my body can protect it self/ Of course it does!!!! a bit overwiehgt I am about 250 lbs and my age is 20. That sounds like a lot overweight - unless you're 6'7" You need to eat right and to exercise to keep yourself healthy. Here's an excellent food guide from Harvard: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/pyramids.html Also, take a multivitamin daily. But your body needs good food to run on and that's the most important step you can take.
Bunni
Echinacea.. It is a immunity booster from the health food isle. (Pill form) your supposed to take it when you have a cold to boost you immune system. You can take it daily as well (like a vitamin). Definatley worth a try. Try punching up "how to boost my immune system" up on the net. You can find lots of help there.
HotCaliGirl
I know that weight is a sensitive issue, but the reality is that your overweight status is causing harm to your health. Ny weight is proportionate and I exercise - the last time I got sick like with a fever was when I was 15 and I am 30 years old. Today, you should start making better food choices - cut out the junk and eat healthy and exercise. I know you hear this all the time, we all do, but it is the truth. You are only 20 years old, yet you weigh 250 pounds. Even for a tall woman that is too heavy, especially for your young age... I don't want to sound harsh but your weight has to drop a bit for you to feel better. It may not be easy but it will be worth it once you begin to lose some weight... I won't preach on the food choices, exercises, etc. I think you know that you should eat in moderation, and at least start walking to make you more active. Take small steps - nothing drastic, so that you can incorporate it into your life and improve upon it over time! (Don't take any shortcuts like popping pills or only taking vitamins instead of in addition or instead of, losing the weight and exercising. The excess fat that you are carrying around is not only suppressing your immune system, but is straining your heart, which unless you correct will come back to become a more serious condition over time)
HotCaliGirl
(oops, your profile says male, I said woman - but still, even for a tall male!! )
pseud
In this day and age, it makes no sense to even try to be politically correct, so I won't. You are not just a bit overweight. If you are 250 pounds, you are quite a bit overweight, and you should lose that weight. The person to talk to is going to be your doctor, and then a dietician. The reason you are getting sick so often, and having difficulty recovering, is actually due to your being fat. If you have the drive, you can spend however long it takes to lose the weight and become healthier. You don't have to become an amazingly fit person, but you should try as hard as you can to get down to a weight level that is considered healthy. Take advantage of the fact that you are young. Nip this in the butt now before it becomes more serious.
billybadass36
Before you all start slamming the 250lb guy about being substantially overweight, you need to take a minute. If this person is a rock hard 250lbs, he's not overweight. Now, his screen name being "fatty", I think we can assume otherwise, but I think the carte blanche statements, "for a 20 year old 250 lbs means you're fat", are inaccurate. When I was 20 years old I was 5'10" tall and weighed 220 lbs with 9% body fat. Not a person on the planet would have called me "overweight". I know that's probably not the case with this dude, but just FYI. Weight and obesity are mutually exclusive.
HotCaliGirl
In my case, I responded thinking I was writing to a female. After I made the post, I looked at the profile and saw he was a male. I think he should've disclosed his gender since 250 for a man is not as bad as for a woman, but regardless he could still be better off losing a few pounds, whereas for a female she would be better off losing, ideally, at least fifty pounds...
