Hello all, I have a question.

My husband started walking alot a few months ago to help with losing weight and I know walking is good for stress etc. I have noticed his eating habits are better too. Here's my question.

He takes a multi-vitamin, which is fine, but he also takes other nutritional supplements as well. I have looked them up and found out what they are for etc. Here's what I don't understand. He is 34 years old, in good health, other than wanting to shed a few pounds and maybe tone up a bit.

The doctor has not told him that he needs the extra supplements. I have also had people tell me that at his age, unless the doctor has recommended them, it's really not good for him to be taking these extra things.

So, I guess my question is, can they be harmful? Here are the supplements he's taking:

1. Milk Thistle ... promotes healthy liver function,

2. Potassium ... proper heart and muscle function,

3. Alpha Lipoic acid ... acts as an antioxidant to help netralize cell damaging radicals that contribute to pre-mature aging & helps metabolize sugar in the body,

4. Zinc ... helps with the immune system,

5. Grape seed extract ... an antioxidant,

6. chromium picolinate ... maintain healthy blood sugar level.

7. Antioxidant formula ... contains A, C and E for a healthy immune system.

8. Tonalin 1000 CLA ... helps reduce body fat.

I understand some of these can be good for you, but it just seems to me he's taking right many things, and I was wondering if they could end up working against him?

If I were you, I'd send a fax or email to your doctor with a list of supplements he's taking and see what your doctor states.

Hi Pocky thanks for the reply. Yes I might could do that. However its like I have had people tell me before unless his doctor has recommended them to him, he probably shouldn't be taking alot of them. I asked him when he went for his phyiscal if his doctor has said anything to him about taking all those supplements and he said no. I doubt his has even asked or mentioned it to his doctor anyway, probably because he figures his doc would tell him no he doesn't need all those. Thanks again though.

Hey Jadestar,

I think that for your H age he is taking way too many supplements .Unless the he is taking a medicine that is depleting these from his body and the dr has suggested it.. I would not recommend him taking all this stuff being that he is healthy .. He can lose weight with proper diet and exercise and lots of water.. Just my opinion .. wouldn't recommend that he keep taking them!!Some of these can be harmful to the body if you consume too much ..

I think he should be taking only a multi vitamin and the CLA. With the multivitamin your body will take what it needs and rid itself of the rest through urination. CLA has actually worked quite well for me to maintain muslce mass while reducing fat. The other things that he is taking supplements for should all be reached if he is eating a balanced diet. Some supplements can be toxic if taken when the body doesn't need it.

FYI: For anyone considering using CLA, the side effects are minimal BUT if you are prone to cold sores it will make them a LOT worse. I've had to actually stop using CLA for this reason as I started tolook like a street whore.. Not very attractive.

Hi Karen thanks for the reply. The CLA I guess is fine and he does take a multivitamin. I agree I think thats all he needs, but for some reason he thinks he needs all this other stuff. Thanks again for the reply.

I would have him be careful about taking the potassium as it can be quite dangerous if his level go to high or low. If he is takign potassium he should have his blood level checked frquently- if to high/low for long periods of time can cause severe damage to the heart and cause him to go into a lethal rhythm. I think they only recomn. that to people who take diuretics that waste potassium and even they get their levels checked.
