i am not sure if i am on the right path

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am in my sophomore year in college now and studying English Language Teaching (it is not my first language and i do not live in a country where English is widely spoken.) I love English so much and have always thought ELT was for me. But the thing is that 1) i am not used to "speaking" English and 2) i am... not really good at making speeches & presentations etc. But my job requires all these, thus we are to make a lot of speeches and presentations in class. And this makes me really, really nervous. Then I start to think whether this major and job are really for me. I don't know if I can get over this nervousness, fear and make things work...

I wanted to teach people to ride and train horses when I was your age. I was good at it too.

I am now working in construction...

I didn't like making speeches and I really have never been what I would refer to as a "people person". But occasionally I have to get up in front of people and do these things.

What ever you do do not "imagine everyone naked" when doing your speeches. if your imagination is anything like mine its a step too far and you will end up giggling and blushing!

Just take a deep breath, put a smile on your face, try to engage with as many people as possible making eye contact for a couple of seconds with as many as possible and the rest will flow. Perhaps you could travel and spend some time in an English speaking country after this to gain experience?

Life has many twists and turns. You will develop skills that can be transferred to other job roles if you continue so my advice is keep at it and then have another think once you have finished.

Good luck.

@Toodaloo;

Thank you so much for your advice! Now I am feeling better and you're right. And I guess no job is easy and I need to do some things to improve myself even if it's hard for me. And yeah, I will try to go to an English speaking country. Thank you so much for your advice. I wish you the best luck in your life, too! c:

Welcome to adulthood.

Everyone I've ever known has gone through periods of deep uncertainty about themselves, their place in this world and what they're doing about it.

Work to understand and better yourself. Improve what you can, accept what you can't and keep moving forward one day at a time.

Adulthood hit me really hard. Thank you so much for your advice. I will do my best to improve myself and not go hard on myself. :)
