Why do some women date felons?

Recommended Posts

Ditto.

Women who date men currently in jail, felons etc, women who specifically seek out imprisoned men or men with criminal histories often fall into a certain category.

I think for some women it depends on their environment. If you grow up in a place where there is a high incarceration rate then chances are you'll often end up dating men with criminal histories. However, for women who have no such affiliation but seem to seek out these men, well usually its about feeling like they can fix them, feeling special that this "dangerous" man loves them, feeling like they are an exception and get validation from that, and yes it's a two way street.

There is a high incarceration rate in the USA. I do live in one of the states with the highest incarceration rates. Btw I met this man on pof.

What was his crime?

In any event, everyone is different, because for me I don't date men simply because they are fun, so I don't really resonate with that as a reason to date someone.

I guess for me when I date people I think about lots of other qualities, ways in which they will fit with my lifestyle, my friends, my family, how they can add to my life, our views on life etc. So simply him being a cute, fun felon doesn't cut it. Likewise if he is a cute, fun any other thing...as I think of a bigger picture. But of course some people just date casually so maybe fun is enough...and maybe as a teen fun was all it took but at this age I don't think of dating just as about fun and cute.

Btw I am not saying that people who have been imprisoned are by default bad people or even always guilty of their crimes at all. I'm not naive. I've been a mentor in a prison education program, I know some of the realities. What I am saying is that people tend to weigh the pros and cons of dating someone and for most women who are educated, high self worth, not bad looking, a felon does not seem like a choice pick. Sure, if somehow they fall for this person it's one thing or if they were together before they become imprisoned it's one thing, but I find seeking out a felon to be atypical of most women. I think knowing the story of a particular "felon" and what he is doing now also makes a difference...

I guess the more confusing aspect is women "dating" a man still in prison whom they met while he was in prison through prison pen pal services. Or if you are dating someone who repeatedly goes to jail...then your choice becomes very questionable vs. you dating someone who has a record but has moved beyond it.

Imo dating someone bevause they are fun is fine in the beginning. We couldnt get off the ground because he couldnt get stable.

Btw ive been to college, im in good shape, dont have low self esteem and get called beautiful even by women. So no, no desperation. I just found someone I liked who happened to have a record.

I think if a woman wants to date her pen pal, she can go right ahead. Ive read what women say about mwi, and they have the same isdues as everyone else aside ftom the prison thing. Personally, id recommend she let him get out and get on his own two feet first before trying to get in a relationship. To each her own, I guess.

Men date lust after and date female felons, but people dont flip about that.

I think men who date women who are in prison for violent crimes are nuts as well. Men who resort to dating women like that must be desperate. I can understand somebody who has turned their life around and changed but I just don't get the appeal of constantly going after criminals and that goes for men and women.

Daddy issues. They crave male attention and seek out emotionally unavailable and messed up men. They chase the love and attention they never got from their fathers, because they missed out on the love/protection/attention/affection/guidance that good fathers provide. A strong, kind male father figure is so important to a young girls self esteem, and if it's missing she may spend her whole life trying to fill that void. Subconsciously, of course.

I mean, when you say "felons" do you actually mean "thugs"? Because you can get a felony for fleeing the scene of an accident or getting into a bar fight one time in college. Millions, millions of people have felonies, unfortunately, for a variety of reasons. I see no reason to rule someone out from the dating pool entirely because of whatever thing they did however long ago. What some people think of as minor offenses can land people some serious jail time. I have not - to my knowledge - ever dated (nor am I) a felon, however I wouldn't be surprised if I did without being aware.

Forget the whole 'bad boy' appeal trope because that horse is dead and decomposing so please just let it rest in peace. In reality, the answer is simple. Why does anyone date anyone? They're good looking, they don't want to be alone, they want to "fix" them, they think love will make them better people or maybe....they just happen to like their personalities in spite of their criminal record.

Oh yeah, and people change. Being a criminal is not necessarily a life-long commitment. Some people actually do get their acts together.

Maybe you do, but society at large doesnt care at all when men do it.

Take Jeremy Meeks. Men were all up in arms about that, coming strong with the haterism. Yet men are lusting after prison bae some of which are models, no one cares.

Hard truth is, some people are just going to get a lot of attention because they are HOT or have some other trait that makes them attractive. This is true whether or not the individual has a record or has been incarcerated.

I was making the assumption that the poster means a habitual felon or a someone that's been in prison. Usually people who habitually break the law have issues- and those issues manifest in behavior like crime and addiction.

There are many beautiful, successful, confident, talented women who know they are worthy and yet make horrible choices with men. I grew up with an addict father, many criminal relatives and the women that Iove them. Beauty, success and intelligence does not heal old pain. Men like this bring women down, usually. In my life experience, most of the women that date/ marry habitual criminals either always needed therapy or end up needing therapy. That's just my experience, though.

I do think people can change, but for some people "a record" is enough to be a deal breaker and that's OK. For you, it was fun to date the felon even though he couldn't get it together. Some women would consider him a bad bet from the start and not want to waste time on him, and that's OK, too.

If you're a woman who doesn't like physical intimacy it sounds perfect. You just have to hope he doesn't behave himself and get out early. Or else you're stuck actually having sex with him.

Not like physical intimacy ? That's crazy talk . That thought never even occurred to me, but it makes some sense I guess.

If that's true she better also hope he doesn't get conjugal visits.

Beauty and self worth aren't one and the same. Lots of beautiful women have low self worth. I'm not saying you do by the way, I'm just saying that people often point out someone's looks or money as a "sign" they can't have low self esteem when that's not true and one's self worth often stems from how you were raised, family of origin stuff, life experiences etc and not merely if other people think you look good. Being desperate too isn't just about you're not pretty enough to get someone...lots of pretty women date abusive men, men who are bums, men with drug problems, men with all kinds of issues because despite their beauty and success they don't feel worthy of a stable man. I know women who subconsciously run the other way from decent men and exclusively date men with tons of issues and problems whom they spend most of their time trying to fix, explain him to other people, apologize for him and it's always one drama after the next but they get something out of it.

I don't know any man who has dated a woman with a felony but I have heard of more women who have. Even in this thread the only person who has admitted to dating a felon, is you, and you're a woman...I don't doubt some men date women who are felons but it seems less common, that's probably why people aren't up in arms, not because they support men dating women who are felons, but because they don't hear about it. It also seems more women are willing to date a felon and defend them and wait for them in prison while it seems if a woman goes to prison, most men aren't gonna wait for her and many men don't seek women in prison for pen pals to marry or go around defending imprisoned women...whereas I see quite the opposite with women. Also, more men are imprisoned than women so that also accounts for why there are more cases of women dating male felons than men dating female felons.

Anyone can do anything they want technically, the question was about why, not if they should or shouldn't. It's anyone's prerogative to date whomever, but who you date will say a lot about you. For me, I get people can make mistakes and have records, but for example, aggravated assault? No thanks. I don't think that's a good bet for a date for me personally. In dating non-felons I'm also very cautious to look at a man's history, listen to what he says about exes, his family etc...so if he has been imprisoned for aggravated assault...all the fun in the world won't make me choose him as a potential great bet for a boyfriend.

To be real, most relationships fail. Many times when you meet someone it wont get off the ground. Thats just how relationships are. Im not going to hold a relationship with a felon (theres more to him than his record) to some impossible standard. Maybe he did go to prison, but guess what? He was more respectful of females than most men. Lets be real. If anything else had gone wrong, it would always have been because of his record. If he cheated, its cuz hes an excon. If he had left for another woman, it would have been because hes an excon. If I had gone to therapy afterwards, it would have been because he is an excon.

Its like how people tell me not to date outside my race. It was always proof when the relationship failed why I shouldnt date white men. If i had been dating men in my race, i would have been encouraged to keep trying. The truth is a lot of people go through failures in relationships. When someone sees a woman dating someone they dont like because of X, then X must be the reason the relationship failed.

I really know of women who date men with records or men who are currently incarcerated. Sometimes people just like each other. Its not complicated at all. As far as them needing therapy...Life is just not that exciting. Most are fine.

Ok lets say all these women need therapy. Their crazy codependents. Well, that has nothing to do with im being a felon. A lot of people use drugs and have an addiction they just happened to not have been caught. Is it really worse because man in question got caught?

If some women are cool with it, who cares? Im not criticizing Roys wife for sticking around. Im sure theyre in love despite his tendencies. He has a woman who loves him through thick and thin, she has a trophy husband. Everyones happy. Lets move on.

I dont think the purpose of this thread was even the well being of the woman. I think a lot of guys on ls in general are upset because men they deem inferior to them are getting dates and married. Its haterism.

I used to be mad because my ex left for a girl with a thug fetish who also didnt seem bright. Im not entitled for him to stick around because I was nice. He saw something in her, and im not going to waste anymore time wondering why.

Like Frozen, let it go, let it go.

No relationship is perfect. Women who are dating prisoners or excons have the same issues as everyone else.

Women dating "bad boys"?

I think it's a combo of several things...

For one, women's psycho/biologically want strong men....Women look for symbols in a man that he can provide and/or protect her (and the kids they may have). Cuz think about it, we humans are part animals - we have to reproduce and survive, a woman's gonna look for a mate that can help her propagate the species... Not gonna find that in a weak guy

But, the issue with these women is that they misplace "strength" for what I think is cowardice and insecurity in all these "bad boys". A real "man" doesn't commit crimes, hurt and/or abuse people.

Another reason, well yeah, some women want to "heal" men. They wanna "cure" them, "fix them up", and they take on these men as a project.

And, another reason is probably low-self esteem (this is the best she's gonna get cuz he's locked up and has no options) and/or she thinks she can't do better.

Now men who date "bad girls"...

I think it's the excitement...the edginess.

Then, other occasions I think it's a "Captain Save a Ho" complex - where men, again, want to provide and protect women - but they are misplacing their need to provide and protect with a chick who is always gonna be a mess, no matter how much he tries to "rescue" her.

And, ultimately, just like women who date "bad boys", probably low-self esteem and he thinks this is as good as its gonna get cuz she's locked up and doesn't have any options.

In my area, maybe because there's lack of options. A lot of women here date men currently in jail or have some kind of criminal record (usually drunk and disorderly).

Is this is an example of what's considered a "Bad Boy"?

I hear these topics come up about "Badboy vs. Nice Guy" when I think "Bad Boy" I think those that have a criminal record.

Simple. Many felons are good-looking bad boys.

Women that date them tend to have low self-esteem and are unable to get the good-looking successful bad boys. So they settle for the next best thing. Then they get knocked up by the bad boys and seek out the nice provider after the bad boy leaves and can't/won't pay child support.

And, yes, I've actually seen this scenario play out IRL.

You are making some ridiculous statements. Women dating prisoners have worse issues than "everybody else". That's obvious, there's no arguing that point.

We're talking about people who society has judged as unfit to live among us. And the women who willingly seek them as relationship partners. That's not normal or good, and it's a poor reflection on those women. It is what it is.

Ive dated all kinds of men casually. This guy was the only one with a felony afaik.

Im talking from a point of actually knowing women who date prisoners even while incarcerated. Most of them are fine, and they have a lot of the same problems other couples do. Its not as sensational as people are trying to make it. :)

It has everything to do with being 'easy' to catch a record. The usa imprisons people for their lifestyles. Theres a reason the usa is leading populous countries as far as prison population, and its not because americans are more dangerous. Many people are in prison for some nonviolent offense, not armed robbery.

Can we just let this good boy/bad boy thing die? I always feel like theres an undercurrent of" Why wont these gd dumb low self esteem broads date me im such a nice guy?" Hmm thats not very nice.

I've literally had that same thought so many times when reading threads like this.

But even if that stereotype were true to an extent, people really have to look at the different aspects and stop making it out to be this moral panic.

A woman dating a guy who is a felon - heck maybe not just a felon but one with a rapsheet a mile long - might not always be the broken little sunflower with low self-esteem people like to paint them as. Some women will date criminals for the thrill, yes that's a given, but how far does that even go? The idea of a thrill would really only come if she were either extremely sheltered and therefore excited by petty crimes - because lets face it, the idealized underworld boss doesn't really exist anymore and damn sure isn't the reality for most criminals.

A lot of them do it because that's just their way of life or what they see as normal or even desirable. You see a guy in and out of jail half his life for drug arrests, meanwhile his wife/girlfriend sees a man who is a provider. A warped idea perhaps but some people aren't bothered by it.

And while I hate to even bring up fictionalized TV, think of Boardwalk Empire, Think Sons of Anarchy, Love/Hate, or Peaky Blinders, etc... There are always convicts and women who love them. For some of the women it's just a case of not knowing better or being able to do better - which, though it sounds like an issue of self-worth, it's actually not and merely the reality in some cases. There's a ceiling in terms of how far "up" we can date for certain people. For others it's a case of "hate the sin, not the sinner" as sometimes they hate the fact that he's a criminal or even try to change him but love him regardless.

As far as the beautiful/intelligent/well-traveled/etc woman who goes for felons/criminals....let's be real here, how often does that really happen anyway? and then, how are we even to measure whether the criminal element is her least favorite or most favorite aspect of his personality?

**I am in no way saying self esteem doesn't play a role, however I really disagree that it's the case as often as people seem to think.

Also, habitual criminals don't all have a certain look, they're not all menacing or "strong" or attractive or players. I mean jesus, they're not hanging around pool halls in leather jackets or leaning against the wall smoking cigarettes or something. My god, it's like you guys have this image of a 50s style James Dean type that you can't shake.

I didnt say beauty and self worth were the same. Looking past someones mistake doesnt mean I have low self worth. If they have that problem, thats just something theyll have to grow out of. Honestly, the drama gets old...And I had the most drama with a nonfelon ex!

Also, more men are imprisoned than women so that also accounts for why there are more cases of women dating male felons than men dating female felons.

There are plenty of men who marry women with records or marry women while they are incarcerated. Ive heard that it is very easy for incarcerated women to catch the eye of a man. You just dont hear about it because no one cares when men do it. When women do it, people dissect her and act like they know exactly whats going on in her mind. I can agree that there are more women marrying felons because most felons are male.

Why would she? The same reason she would date anyone else! If you dont like it, dont do it. He was actually a better partner than most of the guys ive met. Aside from issues related to just being released, he was fine. To be real, hes never hurt for women anyway. Thats because hes funny, outgoing, etc. Girls like him for his personality.
