As for men who say they don't like when girls wear makeup, they are full of ****.

I'm glad you said this. I actually don't think they're bull****ting when they say stuff like this, though. I believe that they believe it. It just comes off as kind of a clueless thing to say and I'm not sure why some men seem so fond of saying it as if it's such a noble, virtuous attitude to have. It annoys me because there's also almost always an undertone of "makeup is vain and women who wear it are shallow." And I think that's really unfair.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but: Everyone looks better with well-applied makeup. That's what it's for - to make you look better. That's why humans have been using it for centuries. It covers the imperfections and accentuates the features that our current society has deemed favorable. Blemishes, dark under-eye circles, uneven skin tone - when those are minimized, you look better. When you highlight your eyes or your lips or your cheekbones in the right way, you look better.

Wearing makeup isn't always even about impressing others. It's a form of self-expression for some, just like a hairstyle or a tattoo or an outfit. And what is the correct answer when asked if someone might not like your hair/tattoo/outfit? The correct answer is, "F* em'. It's not for them, it's for me. I like it."

Many, many women look perfectly nice without makeup. Nobody has to wear makeup. But it can make you look better, if that's what you want.

Anyway, OP, you shouldn't feel like you have to wear makeup just because all your friends are. If you want to try experimenting with it, go to a drugstore with a good return policy (all the drugstores I know of will accept opened, used makeup with a receipt and with all its original packaging. Strange but true.)

Buy a few things and see if you like them. You can return them if they don't work. I would suggest starting with a mascara (and a lash curler!), a lip color, and a concealer. L'oreal typically makes a decent product. If you have a store near you with a good Loreal display, they have a neat little clear plastic thingy with different skin tones painted on it so that you can hold it up to your skin and match your shade. I think their crayon concealer would be good for a beginner. You draw it onto your face anywhere you think you might need a little cover-up and then blend it in with your fingers. For the mascara, use the lash curler for 10 seconds, and wipe off the tip of the applicator before you apply. If you apply it with a light touch, it shouldn't clump up. If it does, you can kind of sweep off those clumps with a cotton swab if that's all you have.

If you like what that does for you, you can branch out to other cosmetics, and/or bump it up to buying higher-end, non-drugstore brands.

Jesus, I've written a lot of words about makeup. Hope that helped!

Yes that's true... And I suppose, no two faces/complexions are a like.

Have you by chance tried their Mineral Veil and/or Pure Radiance?

Sometimes you can skip the foundation and use a tinted moisturizer combined with those two and get a close match (my shade is olive and I've found some foundation to be a bit too orange).

I agree about the orangey foundations! I have ONE that I like, that matches perfectly, but I do tend to prefer the look of powder better.

I do like mineral veil, but since I have dark under eye circles I do need a bit of coverage there. I haven't used radiance in years! But I currently have a few Eyeshadows from BM, and I reach for them even more often than my MAC or urban decay ones.

but strong concealers are a struggle. I keep ending up with ones that turn yellowy, rather than orangey foundations, and I did find a bb cream that I liked, but it turned a bit grey on me.

I definitely need to go to sephora with a bare face and just try everything! But that's hard work, haha :lmao:

The goal is to focus on keeping my skin the best I can, so that I can be lax with the makeup and just throw on some mascara

Well, i have never used make up. I only used lip balm at night. But since now im going to university and loads of girls are putting it on, i dont really care about it before but is it weird that im not doing this? is it important?.

And erm if i do, which one should i start with? i like something like delicate, mild style

If you don't need make up then do without. If you want to experiment then wear light make up then go for the natural look.

Most guys don't like girls who wear a lot of make up so whatever you do, don't over do it.

Ha! I too am the poster child for dark circles. Drives me mad! I find mixing the two BM products helps, and, a good set of makeup brushes and clean fingers does wonders!

I haven't tried the BB creams yet, are they any good aside from turning grey? Forget it I cannot walk into Sephora, nor Ulta, my wallet would burn a hole. :lmao: I admit I have a lot of makeup that should probably be thrown out as I've had it past it's expiration date though will occasionally treat myself to a new lip gloss or something.

Sunscreen for the face is a must, lots of rest and good moisturizer (a zillion other things but embarrassed to admit I don't do as much as I should but for face hydration moisturizer I rotate using moisturizer, aloe vera, and coconut oil and Green Tea, Garlic, Acai).

I don't use mascara that often but LOVE the color ones, especially the electric blue I wore that a lot over the summer. :bunny:

Great makeup chat!!

I think it's mostly because most of them have known too many women who cake it on and end up looking like clowns so they get into this black or white mentality.

I also hate how some people are using makeup as an excuse to call someone shallow or fake.

Makeup isn't only to make you look better (when done correctly) it's also a not-so-permanent way to change your look.

You can have a natural look one day, edgy the next, classic the third. If only I didn't work so early in the morning lol

Great makeup chat!!

My favorite concealer is Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Concealer. I think it works great and doesn't show off the fine lines around my eyes. I buy all makeup I am trying for the first time at Walgreens because you can return opened makeup there and get your money back.

IT cosmetics has some powder that my skin has liked.

I just bought their Celebration foundation at Ulta because of rave reviews. I've only worn it once so far. The medium light I bought seems a bit light but the medium beige seemed a bit dark. Dilemma! I use blush and a bit of bronzer so the lighter one looks a bit better.

I, too, would love it if my skin were so perfect I didn't need makeup but sadly that isn't the case so I've just gotta work with what I've got.

If I were just starting out like the OP, I'd use tinted lip balm and mascara. If she's got bushy eyebrows, they are in style now but still need to be shaped so I'd see a pro.

I think women should wear make up to work. I see it as part of grooming.

Outside of work, I think when you go out with your SO, yes, you should put on make up. I think getting "dolled up" is a treat to your guy.

I like to wear minimal make up cuz I don't believe in putting on a "mask". I mean, I've seen women pull out make up kits like are used on celebrities and that is just too much. Also, IMO, too much heavy make up makes you look older and/or like a prostitute.

I am a big fan of MAC cosmetics. It is expensive, but worth it. And, you only need to use a little of it. And, it's also the publicity. I mean, they get Rhianna, Lady Gaga, etc to promote their products and you can't help but feel "cool" wearing it.

Any who, I just use powder foundation, blush, and a little eyeshadow. If on a date or going out on the town, I'll put mascara and maybe even some eyeliner. If I'm going clubbing, I'll put on glitter or mix up different colors of eyeshadow.

Lips, for work and daytime stuff, I use like a light nude color...At nite, darker reds I guess. If on a date, I try to use moisturizer that is flavored cuz I like flavored kisses

Oh, when it comes to blushes and eyeshadows, I use lighter colors in spring/fall and darker in the colder seasons.

If you're having trouble getting shades of stuff to fit you, try going to the dept stores - even MAC. They will make you up for free and/or let you try on different shades. Pay attention so you can learn from them.
