SycamoreCircle
Not the greatest year for me. Lost my girlfriend in a terrible breakup and now have lost my job, which I really liked. It's strange to be "let go" from a job you were just raving about to people. I'm in a pickle. Owner of apartment is trying to force me out, so I'm faced with either legally confronting(good chance of me winning) or take their "buy-out" of 50K or more. I love my apartment, though. I'd have to move further out, as rents in the area have skyrocketed. Other dilemma is job. I swore to myself if I ever left my current job, it'd be no more restaurant work for me. That was the kindest place I've ever worked. I need a change. Something closer to people. I'd like to be a Manny or conversely, a pot dealer. Something where the government is not taking all of my money. I've also considered leaving Brooklyn. All of my close friends have gone. I'm here alone. Not many connections outside of the restaurant biz. Sort of have a secret ambition to buy land in Colombia, in the jungle, and live off the grid. I traveled there a month ago. Beautiful country. So many questions...
Dontfindme
Sorry to hear about your misfortunes. It must be something in the Brooklyn air because I've actually had all of the same happen to me- got dumped, lost my wonderful job, and now my landlord is trying to get rid of us. On the bright side, your buy-out is much more than mine. It has been such a challenge starting over this year. I hope it works out for you.
Author SycamoreCircle
Trust me, you can push them up in price. I know a woman who was initially offered 5K and walked out with about 35. Just begin negotiating and stick to your guns. They'll say, "oh, no that's impossible!" But when you begin waving that carrot in their face, they'll bend. They're going to renovate and make a killing off of you, if it's one of these giant property corporations. My neighbor got paid 60K, they let him have 4 months free rent and they wiped out previous debts he owed. Ah...gentrification...
Toodaloo
Well it could be worse... So far this year I have been on deaths door twice. I have a group of wonderful doctors and nurses, as well as my Mother, who is amazing, to thank for the fact I am still here and not 6ft under. During the second "incident" my so called beloved came into hospital saw them trying to revive me and buggared off paint balling for the weekend. He didn't phone to find out if I lived or died. He found out when I phoned him and the conversation was "normal" so I assumed he didn't know. I found out after he got back and told me he didn't bother to stick around... After all of that and still being seriously ill I was understandably very messed up so I decided to go and see my best friend for a few days. The trip did not go well as she was in a mess and desperately needed my help, but as is typical of her she hadn't asked for it, so I have been freaked out with worry for her as its still not sorted (getting slightly better day by day now though). I came back to a note on the cooker telling me he was gone and I deserved better... So I now had to support the house on my own having taken shed loads of time off work due to illness and being broke... oh and I was still not well... That was in April. He actually did me a favour. I do deserve better. So I have made it my goal to go and get myself better. I have had a few slips and hiccups along the way but by and large I am much better emotionally, financially and also my health has improved no end. I have lost much of the weight that I had put on through being so miserable, I am in the process of giving up smoking, I am learning new things, am happier in my skin and feel much more secure. Sometimes when you get a kick in the goolies its not such a bad thing. After all if you hit rock bottom the only way is up...! Make your decision and go for it. See this as an opportunity to revitalise your life.
Author SycamoreCircle
Does anyone ever feel the pressure of social media when it comes to bad turns in life? What I mean is---I'm out of a job. I feel like the people I mostly spent time with was co-workers. I don't really engage in social media. I don't like it. Now that I'm out of a job, who do I have to network with? I feel like I have to draft a letter explaining my situation and asking for help from the people I do know. It's either that or retroactively build some Facebook profile and network... Ugh...

That's where everyone is networking nowadays. It may be good to take a look there; they also post jobs there. Brooklyn is foreign now. My poor, personal neighborhood is dead. It sucks.
