Dealing with anxiety

Recommended Posts

For the longest time, I tend to overthink or over worry about situations. In doing so I build up a lot of anxiety to the point where sometimes I burst out into tears.

Over the summer, I worried myself sick thinking about the upcoming school semester (the one I'm currently in.) I was so scared of failing and letting those around me down. The reason why I worried was because I've failed many times in the past. It feels like my mindset is set to fail by default. Yet, when I take a step back and look at my progress so far this semester, I've been doing great! I have all A's and things are gong well.

But tomorrow is early registrations for Spring classes and this sense of anxiety is brewing again. Why can't I muster up the courage to believe in myself? Yes, this is probably a question only I can answer, but it's so tough.

What are you most afraid would happen if you DID let those people down? What is the reasonable and realistic chance of it ACTUALLY happening?

Would they ACTUALLY feel let down in the first place? If so, why? What are THEY afraid would happen if you did not pass EVERY class or did not get a high passing grade in EVERY class? Do their feelings and fears have any basis in reason and reality?

Why won't they give you the freedom to make mistakes and/or "fail" so that you can learn from your mistakes and so-called "failures"?

Does your fear (about letting them down) have any basis in reason or reality?

What will happen if your WORST fear actually comes to pass? What will happen if THEIR worst fear actually comes to pass?

Do they know how you feel about letting them down? Do you know how they feel about how you feel?

If you're going to be anxious and fearful, then you need ALL the facts and information to support your feelings. Collect those first, and then decide about feeling anxious and fearful, especially about the matter of how well (or poorly) you do or may do at school.

Being anxious is self imposed. Its a hard reality to accept that we allow our minds to dwell intensely. To aide in this thought pattern ...think of regurgitating the same foods over and over again., that is what anxiety is doing mentality. The way to intercede is many fold. One is thru diet ( yes certain foods can calm the brain and lessen the body into a serene state). Herbal tea is my go to. Secondly is aroma therepy. Thirdly is to write it down ONCE. resolve and move on. learn to be kind to your mind and body. Again, it will take practice, yet its thru these changes that you'll garner results. Otherwise see a therepist. They can work with you on eleviating the anxiety and different meds to ease it.

I too have pretty intense anxiety. It only happens due to relationships though. I have always told myself to not stress over my college and university grades. Just focus and don't take it to serious because when we are too serious about things we overthink and when we overthink we get anxious.

You should consider some anxiety counseling, could get medication (daily or only when you need it) and you can try some of your own techniques (meditation, writing your thoughts down, aromatherapy-which I like actually)

Overthinking and anxiety is a very tough thing to deal with but with the right help and techniques you will have an easier time (It won't ever go away though)

I feel for you, OP. I also suffer from anxiety but it's manageable so I've never sought treatment. Still, it is really tough at times to get through the episodes on my own. Like others have posted, you have to work through the emotions/feelings and ask yourself, what's the worst that can happen?

In that anxious moment, try as hard as you can to focus on the present and analyze your situation in the present. You are fearing scenarios that your mind has made up ...they are not real.

Try meditating and practicing mindfulness...being and staying in the present.

This quote has helped me ground myself when experiencing high anxiety:

Lao Tzu - "“If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.”

I am highly anxious myself...mostly when it comes to my job and fear of being unemployed due to bad experiences this past year. Being let go 3 times after never once being let go in the many jobs I've had in the last 7-8 years. Also I get very anxious in the car after some bad experiences. There are daily maintenance anxiety medications that do help.
