Does anyone (well, women!) have experience in dealing with ovarian cysts?

I have two, one burst then came back again and now I also have a newer one on the other ovary.

Really painful, awful infact - SO bad that I almost considered going to the hospital afew weeks ago but knew I didn't wanna sit in Emerg. for 4-6 hours waiting to be seen.

Been told to go on BC to shrink them but I can't cuz I smoke, I'm 34 and I get migraines. (Reason why I stopped taking the Pill) They told me that I can have surgery but the cyst has to be 10cm! Can you believe that?? OUCH. I am NOT looking forward to my next period.

All I do when the pain comes is take painkillers, rest and use a heating pad.

I hear women in their early 30's are prone to cysts and just wondering who else out there has experienced this. Really does suck.

I had them on/off since I was about 20. I did the BC thing when I was younger and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Most of mine tend to go away on there own but I've had 3 surgeries for these cysts in 10 years.

Honestly, if you are in this much pain, you need to go see another gyno. I've never had one "measure" my cyst. They usually look at how long you've had it, and the amount of pain your in. Draining the cyst is a simple out-patient procedure. Sounds like you would be a good candidate for this.

Cysts were found on my ovaries when I was 18. Doctor put me on BC and they eventually shrank and went away.

my sister had her baby about 1 year ago and about 2-3 months afterwards she had a cyst on her ovary that was the size of a grapefruit and when she layed down you could actually see it. she has had problems all her like with cysts on her ovaries and they put her on birth control to help her out. she had surgery and they took one ovary out....but that's because it gave her problems frequently and it was huge! I hope everything works out for you!

I feel your pain I had a couple of them but they were all the size of a dime (or smaller) but I had one pop on me once and I was in so much pain that I thought I was going to die!!

I went to the hospital and they gave some medication for the pain and told me to go see my Gyno...He said the pain comes from the fluid that is released from the cyst and it has a lot of bacteria in it and thats the pain you feel...I was on Birth Control for a while and stopped ...my doc says BC helps them not grow...maybe you should get on the pill once I got back on I've only had one and it went away...

I smoke too but not cigarettes and that doesn't effect you so much...I have the lowest dose of BC and all my worries went away...Would you like the name of my BC??

Thanks the replies.

I can't go on the BC pill because of my past history of migraines. If I went on them I would get the migraines and other side effects. (Neurologist has told me I'm too young for a stroke but the symptoms I was experiencing before were not good for me - SO cuz of that I say no to BC, just incase!) Wish I could though, would make it easier for me.

Just really painful and frustrating! No need to go into details as you all know what I am talking about.

I will make another Gyno appt and see what they say. Waiting now for more Ultrasound results to see how big this sucker is! Until then I guess it's painkillers and the heating pad!

Good to know I am not alone in this, even if it isn't serious, it's still a pain in the butt! HEHEHE, Or shall I say side!

Change docs and make an appointment ASAP. Never had those, and if God shall help me, never will. I do have some sot of predisposition to it, so I do live with this fear.

What I hope is to meet the perfect guy and f*cking have a baby or two. I'm terrified of not being able to have kids, but that's a personal and unsupported by facts fear.

How do you know that you have cysts? I've heard that if you have them it's harder to get pregnant, is that true?

You make an ecography - ultrasounds. I have no idea about getting pregnant. What I know is that they can get big and then you have to remove your ovaries... irrespective of your having or not having a kid :( !

Not all cysts get big and not all women get cysts. I personally hate everything related to putting the word "desease" and "female genitals" in the same sentence.

My last surgery I had wasn't just because I had another cyst on my ovary. We had it done because I couldn't get pregnant (last two pregnancies weren't a problem) - so I knew something was wrong. The doctor did the laporoscopy and found a cyst on my ovary (no surprise) but also several in my Fallopian tubes - preventing the pregnancy. A few months later, I was pregnant.

From what I've been told the cysts form because the egg doesn't release properly. (At least the cyst I've had). The fill with fluid much like a blister and the bigger they get the more painful they become.

I too recommend seeing a different gyno. You shouldn't have to live with this pain.

The ecography is very very simple and doesn't hurt AT all: they squize some jelo on your belly(right above the pubic hair) and they walk a stick on it to see the shape of your ovaries.

There's nothing to be scared of :), I'm sure you're fine. Just remember to check it out the next time you see your gyno.

Yup the ultrasounds are not painful at all...Only thing that is uncomfy is the 5 glasses of water you have to drink and HOLD IN YER PEE until they finish the outer examination. Once that is over, they let ya pee, then do an internal exam with the magic wand with a camera attached to it. Doesn't hurt either just abit uncomfy too.

Just be prepared to stay near a toilet for the next 2 hours or so after the Ultrasound is done...I peed every 5-10 mins! FULL bladder! (Like those long drunken pees I used to do in my teenaged years! LOL!)

IF this pain does come back I will be seeing a new Dr and demanding them to DO something about it. Not looking forward to my next period I tell ya that...Abit freaked about the amount of pain again...I'm a real wimp when it comes to stuff like that!

You have to say that they make you drink the wated if they theink that you may be at risk-if they see something that might look like a cyst. I was "clean" so I didn't need to do the wated thing.

My sister wans't - her bladder was in the way, so the doc couldn't see wheather she indeed har a cyst or it was one of her organs that appeared on the screen. Did the water stuff and gor the "clear" notice too.

She didn't say anything about going to the toilet every 5 minutes. She did go to the toilet after that to pee, but the rest is a matter of your body being hydrated enough.

WWIU, I am praying for you. It's horrible to fear having your period, :( .

Lucky her...I am petite, 5'1" (did I do that right?? 5 feet, 1 inch! LOL!) and drinking 5 glasses of water in less than an hour is gonna make anybody pee up a storm! Start off eating something, empty bladder completely. Key is to pace yourself otherwise the water doesn't go down as it should lol!

There are diff. types of Ultrasounds, I do know that the ones I have had you must have the fluids inside. Not a big deal though.

Yeah thanks for that, I hate dreading it too. She did give me a good prescription of painkillers so I will probably fill it up this week sometime so I can have it handy just incase I do need to take them. I don't like taking anything stronger than advil/tylenol...But if the pain gets really bad I will!

Man it's tough being a woman!!! ;)

I was the ripe young age of 14 when I had my first cyst. Actually one formed into a benign tumor on my left ovary and they wanted to remove it, but they were able to get around it and remove the tumor only. The cyst was the size of a gob-stopper on the other ovary. They removed my appendix too. 2 weeks after my surgery I was rushed to the hospital again for a cyst on my fallopian tubes. I had it removed by laproscopy (sp?). I've been on the pill for 14 years since then. I am 28 years old and I suffer from endometriosis. I've been told that once I have children the endometriosis goes away. The pill doesn't make my cramps any better. I still experience them, but I'm sure if I wasn't on the pill I'd be keeling over even more.

I get tested for cervical and uterine cancer every 6 months. It runs in my family.

Yes, it does suck. But over time, you end up building a tolerance for it. If you haven't had any children it feels even more scarier, because you wonder how difficult (or easy) it will be. I've been told I will be fine, and I'm sure you will be fine too.

Best of luck.

Wow you've gone through ALOT...You're really strong to have to go through that at such an early age!

I hope your health only continues to improve.

I know I will be fine...That is what I have to tell myself, otherwise I will obess about it...Hense the anxiety disorder! IT's really easy for me to take it to another level so venting about it here, and hearing what everybody has to say is keeping me sane!!

Thanks so much for replying.

Hi

I have two cysts one on each overy. The one of my left is about 5cm and the one on my right is 3cm, I go every six months and get an internal ultrasound. You dont need to drink water to have it done.

What the doctor does is place a small instrument near the opening of the vargina and you can see your overies on the screen.

I was on the pill for over 10 years and still have cysts and now the one on the left dosent even go away it gets a little smaller and then gets larger every month. My doctor was suprised that the pill didnt shrink them or get rid of them.

I guess im one of the lucky ones for i have very little pain with mine.

All though ovarian cancer dose run in my family i also take precautions.

I have since gone off the pill and havent seen any changes.

The machine that is out now for the internal ultransound has only been out for a few years but it very accurte and you can see the results right there. its also quick and easy and pain less to have done. I get one every 6 months.

I would question your doctor about getting an internal ultrasound rather than the traditional ultrasound where you have to drink a lot of water.

Not many doctors have it their office like mine dose because its very expensive machine.

But there may be a facitily where you live that might have it.

Cyberbabie,

I believe the procedure you had done was called a TRANSVAGINAL ULTRASOUND??

They put a condom on the instrument and insert it internally (not very far it doesn't hurt - that is, if you AREN'T a virgin) and move it around slightly to catch the different angles of your uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries..etc..etc??

I've had that procedure done too. I had it done when I had a polyp behind my cervix. They needed to see how big it was for them to determine whether they were going to have it removed or wait for it just to dissolve.

About BCP, I too, am not convinced that it controls the growth of ovarian cysts. It may help it to some extent, but I still get them. I have breakthrough bleeding/spotting every month. I just became used to it. I also have mild cervical dysplasia which I need to have monitored on a regular basis for cervical cancer.

It sucks being a woman sometimes LOL

Butterfly28,

Yes Transvaginal ultrasound is another name for that procedure, But my doctor and even my insurance company call it a internal unltrasound. Maybe its called differnt depending on where you live.

Im with you as far as the BCP goes, because when my doctor found my first cyst she was suprised i had one being as how i have been taking the pill for over 10 years. And while on the pill i also developed another cyst on my other overy. The pill has also not made a different in the reduction of the size of either of my cysts.

The only thing the pill did for me was regulate me lesson my cramps and shorten the time i have my period. I dont have bleeing in between. All though i had been on other brands that did cause bleeding in between.

Funny you mention about "shortened periods". I've been on BCP for 14 years and only in the last 2 years have my periods been shortened.

My periods used to be pretty HEAVY and would last Monday to Sunday. Now my periods are heavy on the first and second day, and then they fizzle out by Friday, if I'm lucky!!!

As for cramps, because I suffer from endometriosis, I don't think the BCP has helped it THAT MUCH. There could be cycles where I am bending over in agony in the bathroom, sometimes I'll be really emotional right before (I think that's pretty generic, no??) and other times, it's smooth sailing. It's really an "up and down" kinda thing.
