dichotomy
I don't know - deadlifts are pretty amazing. Recently started some Bulgarian split squats into my routine and they are pretty awesome though.
StandingO
Well I agree it is a great exercise if performed correctly. Part of me wishes I felt like you guys. I unfortunately never liked them much and for the most part always stayed away from them. My GF loves them (she is a natural under the bar) and has no physical issues with abdominal area, back or knees or hips (I have some of these). In the past I have tried to work out with her on them but I never stick at it too long. It ticks her off a bit. My bad. I was doing much lighter weight. I was told not to go heavy by my doc which was fine with her. She would add more weight and I would spot. Months ago her old GF workout partner returned to the rack with her and I could take a break lol. I was doing well with Goblet squats for a time. I am certain impressed by those who put in the work and get the great result from them.

Imported
When I reassessed my goals for how I wanted my body to be, squats was one of the things I got rid of. My legs, especially calves, are naturally big. I was never in danger of looking like I only do upper body lifts. Even if I only do upper body lifts. However, squats made my quads too big. So I stopped. Deadlifts on the otherhand is perfect. I'm not really into isolating muscles. I realize squats do more than just quads, but when I did squats, my quads got much larger than I wanted.
Emilia
Deadlifts on the otherhand is perfect. I'm not really into isolating muscles. I realize squats do more than just quads, but when I did squats, my quads got much larger than I wanted. They help me grow my body all over pretty evenly, I push through my heels so I use my glutes a lot. Deadlifts have cut the amount of time I spend in the gym significantly, best lift ever.
thefooloftheyear
People dont like to squat, IMO, beacause its difficult to breathe, can be hard on the back, and, well, they arent that much fun...Heavy leg presses are the same for me...Ive gotten light headed several times...Its just hard to breathe, for me.. I love the movement....Its a full body exercise, and the core benefits are well documented..Its great for hips and glutes as well.. TFY
Mr Scorpio
I love the movement....Its a full body exercise, and the core benefits are well documented..Its great for hips and glutes as well.. I put them back into my workout for the first time in a long time. Had a "leg day" with some planks at the end. My abs were burning the next day. I assumed at first that it was because of the planks. Then I did another set of planks yesterday and... nothing. Now I realize it was the squats that had my gut screaming. Just about to hit the gym for "back night". We'll see how much the deadlifts hit my hammies.

dichotomy
check youtube for anyting with Mark Riptoe and squat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i60dzS84n8 Despite proper form, back squats mess with my lower back issues. Deadlifts, specifically trap bar deads and now Bulgarian split squats get my lower body just fine with out majorly messing with my lower back issues.

Author MrNate 2.0
Mr. Nate, any tips on preforming a correct squat? I feel like I just don't do them right. The main concept behind squatting is making sure to drive the weight through the center of your feet and resting back on your heels. This is so that you can balance the weight properly when you're squatting and have force in the right part of your feet to drive back up as well. (A good rule of thumb is that if your knees bend past your toes, you aren't sitting back enough.) You can also practice against a wall as well. Stand against a wall with your feet shoulders width (or more, what ever is more comfortable) apart and your toes angling a bit outward. The goal is to squat against the wall without falling down. That will give you a good idea of how you should center yourself when getting under weight. It may be tricky to get at first, but it will be a godsend for your knees. Trust me. I'll see if i can find a vid as well.

Squats will absolutely work that core, as well as stimulate your GH, and really get them muscles growing.

Properly formed light squats beat bad heavy squats any day of the week.
Author MrNate 2.0
Well, I always love the people at the gym whose bench to squat ratio is always to never. Nothing like total body fitness... Different means to the same end. In the end, no one cares how much you squat, bench, deadlift, crossfit, (insert whatever exercise here). You can get ripped doing any of the above. In the end, the question is do you look good? If you do, that's all that matters.

Yep. You have to do what your body responds to/ relates to your goals. For me, I used to be skinny, and nothing stimulated my growth like squatting. My back was always on point, so deadlifts do nothing for me. I can do them all day but I don't get any response from it. However, when I squat, everything is completely engaged. Pullups are more effective for me than deads. Powerlifting was a great experience, and taught me what gets my body cranking and what I can part with. Deadlifts is more of my accessory exercise.
