Robert Z
Actually I wouldn't mind paying a certain junk food tax. Maybe it should be factored in as a default setting and those who take care of their body gets greater tax refund at the end of the year than those who don't. So yeah go ahead and tax me and I will pay for my medical bill that's coming later over the course of a lifetime. There is no need for a refund. If you don't buy cigarettes or Big Macs then you won't be paying the tax. If all extremely unhealthy purchasing decisions are taxed at the point of sale, and if that money is dedicated to health care, then we have a way to pay for health care and protect the right of choice, even if we want to make bad decisions. Sugar is so bad [based on the cost to society] that some scientists now think it should be a controlled substance. So this is just another canary in the mine. They way that I see it, either we tax the right to choose or we give up the right to live as we wish. I believe this choice is inevitable. In France, when you buy a lift ticket for skiing, you pay for the health care risk as a tax at the point of sale. Edited November 2, 2014 by Robert Z
