FWB doesn't want to be FWB anymore.

My "FWB" of a year and 3 months decided to stop being intimiate with me, he said to me he wants to be celibate for a while, because he doesn't feel comfortable doing it anymore. He also said he wants to remain "friends" and that he truly values our friendship. My first thought was "ohmigod, there goes our friendship/relationship". I got really angry at first then really sad. i figured we werent going to talk anymore, because we had the "yes we will keep in touch. We will always be friends no matter what" conversastion.

So little to my surprise, that same day he told about he wanted to be celibate. He calls me freaking out. He tells me he's extremely worried that he's going to lose my friendship because of his decision. He and i are really close aside the imtimacy part, so i know there isn't a third person involved. So my question is what could have made him make this decision?

He doesn't want to lose you, but doesn't want to be in that sort of relationship with you anymore. Sometimes there are people with whom you really enjoy spending time, but just can't function in a relationship with. Sometimes a "FWB" relationship can grow past sex, and deepen into something more intimate: but not necessarily sexual or romantic. I expect he knows that for him, your relationship was heading toward an end if he stayed in it, so he backed out of it - in order not to lose the feelings he has for you. Sometimes staying in a relationship where you aren't happy will eventually make you hate and resent the person. I expect he didn't want it coming to that with you, and the only way to prevent it was to back out of the relationship. He's downgrading to 'friends', to prevent it from ending altogether. You'll have to decide what works best for you: losing him as a lover, or gaining him as a potentially lifelong intimate and friend.
