Universe
I'm pretty comfortable meeting and talking to women I don't know. But I have trouble feeling out when it's appropriate to ask for her number. Also - how to bring it up. It seems so awkward to just bust in to, "How about you give me your phone number?" How can you bring it up without being abrupt?

If it is someone you just met and will never see again I usually talk with 'em for 20 or 30 minutes and then ask them if they'd like to get together. A woman who has never met u before and that you are hitting on has decided within the first 5 minutes of the meeting whether she will go out with you, ever f*** you, or if you'll just be a "friend", or if she's just gonna blow u off. If it is someone you see regularly, like in class, then you have more leeway but if u like a gurl you should ask her as quickly as possible. Also - how to bring it up. It seems so awkward to just bust in to, "How about you give me your phone number?" Use "can i give u a call sometime?". if she does not give you the digits right away or hesitates for even 3 seconds or looks nervoous then just take off.
Merin
I agree with Alpha that it does depend on how long you've known her.. IF you've just met her and you've got some basic 411 like her name, made sure she seems interested in talking to you (good eye contact, smiles) then ask for her number by saying "I would really like to get to know you better, can I get your number?" ONLY ask for the number IF you plan to call. I do agree as well that if it's a girl you've just met, she probably has already made up her mind within 5 to 10 minutes of meeting you if she is interested in seeing you again.
