frozengirl
I know far too many people who have done the schooling, gotten a degree or a few degrees and they still don't have a job. So to me going to any type of schooling would not be worth doing, because I still probably wouldn't get a job once I was done with schooling. But what about you, was or is schooling worth it? Did or do any of you have a job after investing all of that time and money and financial aid involved with it?
d0nnivain
I have a graduate degree & have worked in my field for 20+ years. If you hope to earn a living you can raise a family on you at least have a trade or be the next big entrepreneur. A trade is more likely. A high school education alone won't get you far. Mr Scorpio
From what I've seen, college can still be a worthwhile investment IF: (1) you go to a reputable school (doesn't have to be Ivy league or top-20 but the name on the degree does matter) and/or (2) pick a major that is projected to experience significant job growth (healthcare, healthcare, and of course there is always healthcare). Beyond that? You're rolling the dice. I made the mistake of picking a major that I was interested in rather than what was marketable. If I had to do it all over again? Hard to say. I'm not a "tradey" person. Something practical like accounting, being an actuary, something where you can leave you work at home at the end of the day. One that Dono mentioned, dental hygienist, fits that bill. I believe they go through a year of school tops and come out making 40k a year. Grinds my gears in a sense. Author frozengirl
I'm not really the doctor healthcare type and you have to learn a lot to work in one of those fields. And what about some of those schools scamming you of your money?
leavesonautumn
Between going to University or jumping in to a career, I chose the latter. Honestly, I think that it depends on the person. There are people who just decide for themselves that post-secondary is not for them. I only have my high school diploma and I work in a steady job with a great income and a lot of room for advancement. There's also a lot to say for how motivated a person is and what they want in regards to their lifestyle. If I had gone to University, I would've gone for a Bachelor of Arts in History with a limitation in actually being able to use it. If I were to go back to school, I would love to be either a Librarian or an Archivist. It depends on what you want to do, don't pay too much attention to what other people in your life think you should do. A lot of people go to school because their mom and/or dad wanted them to and they came out unhappy and in debt. However, a lot of people also go to school and enrich their lives and achieve their dreams. Whether you go at 18 or you go as a mature student, I believe it's never too late if it's something you truly want. Whether it's university or a trade.
