mrs rubble
Police report filed. Told them everything. What a story it is too! I got scammed by a guy I met online a few years back. He was very smooth, but I got suspicious and went to the police with my concerns. They couldn't do or prove anything for several months, then one day I got a call from the police, he'd finally been caught and it turned out he'd conned several women out of money and property...he'd got away with over 60k in cash and several computers and phones and cars. He spent 2 years in prison for his efforts. Hope the same happens to your 'friend'.
Author ktya
Thanks. That gives me hope. NWPD are pretty good and I have a very good relationship with them. Hope my story turns out even in a small way like yours.
sillyanswer
Police report filed. Told them everything. Good. Details that will help them identify her might include the exact times and locations when she used your bank card, which you can get from your bank statement, (even if it was with your permission some of those times) because then they have a specific time and place to check any CCTV recording of her being there. Did you meet her on a dating site? Make sure they have her username from that site, too.
Author ktya
Bank policy here is that if you give out your pin and card its your own damn fault. Im only out $40 it sucks but im ok with that. More upset about the sentimental jewelery and my tenants jewelery than the money. If they need a picture i can get them one. Getting all the locks changed today. Landlord is being understanding which takes a million pounds off my chest, especially after she emailed him this crap when im deep in the glue. One sided shouting match tenant seems to have clicked that yes, indeed, this woman was a scam artist and her "helpful nature" was all a ruse now that all her gold jewelery is missing. Male tenant is silent like a mouse. He fell for the girls game worse than even i did, considered her a functioning version of his mother. Hes out about $50. I told him about the other tenants missing jewelery and asked him that if anyone came into the house during the day to verify it was someone who lived here in case the scammer copied a key, and not to let her into the house. He didnt even answer. Over the course of the past 7 weeks he fed the girl graphic details of my previous sexual history which gave her more leverage over me. Heres to hoping that another shoe doesnt drop today. This stress is starting to affect my work as im in sales.
Toodaloo
It will blow over. I still wouldn't rule out drugs... I had a stalker earlier this year and it turns out he started stalking me shortly after going back onto cocaine... No one knew until after he was locked up and the debt collectors started knocking on the door... Needless to say they were not legit debt collectors! It will all sort itself out in the end. Just keep plugging through.
beach
Police report filed. Told them everything. That's good! Taking strong action is good! Now they have a record of what she does and hopefully in the future it catches up to her before she takes others for a ride. On a side note - when I said druggie I wasn't thinking junky type - so many are doing prescription medicine and leave no evidence of what they are using. But a lot of prescription meds are worse than any. Bottom line is she uses others by lying and stealing and I'm glad you reported her so the chance that they catch her is better. Hopefully before she does more damage to someone new. Doing something is better than doing nothing! Helps you feel that you're taking some of your power back!
Author ktya
At this point i rule out nothing and beleive nothing that she said. On the pregnancy it may have been me, she may have shown up pregnant, or it may have all been a lie and maybe she just got ahold of a positive test. If i get a family court summons in 9 months ill just go for custody. If she really is pregnant and that lazziez fare about her fertlity in her 40s then her "moral objection" to abortion is probably bunk and shes probably had many of them. Its obvious that the houses, job, car, and apartment are complete hogwash. If you own two houses you have a lot of credit available to you you will not sit around broke and unable to afford cigarettes or food. You do not just sign your apartment over to your son and hand back the keys while staying with someone you met just weeks ago without discussing this in advance. You dont keep a job by not working for 7 weeks and if you have an on call job you certainly will have a working telephone so you can be reached. Her sob story of her daughter on dialysis is also probably completely bunk. Health care in Canada is mostly free so her needing to spend $30,000 a year on extended care for her daughter is very excessive, probably a ruse she uses to bilk more well heeled victims out of larger amounts of money in cash. She tells the story of needing a specialized machine in order to make the dialysis take 6 days instead of 2 weeks comes across as beleiveable because she only.tells the story in snippets. She presented herself as who she says she is because she is wearing expensive jewelery and despite being broke will not sell or pawn it. Evidently this jewelery is simply stolen from previous victims. The police figured she is a relatively professional con because she only stole small jewelery and gold which is difficult to trace, anything unique or with a serial number would be traced more easily. Its pretty embarassing to have been worked like this. Im a pretty smart guy and im usually better at spotting bullcrap. I started to catch on 2-3 weeks in but by that point i was in trouble and almost in too deep to put an end to it.
sillyanswer
Bank policy here is that if you give out your pin and card its your own damn fault. Bank policy doesn't necessarily make her actions not theft. Perhaps she took money from your account with your permission (because you gave her the pin), but you didn't give her permission to run off with the cash.
dreamingoftigers
Ok but the thing I don't get is if they are paying the rent why didn't you hand it over to the LL that same day? as it wasn't yours to spend you say they pay the rent in full even? so in essence you took their rent money and did not pay the rent. Sorry Op when you sublet and to the extent you seam to you have a responsibility to pass it along regardless of what your personal financial situations are cause its not your money basically. As I said she shouldn't have snooped and shared that info but instead of being mad at your tenets and threatening to get rid of them at this point ide be apologizing profusely to them wither or not they side with her is irrelevant in the financial situation at hand.. And if they are paying the rent in full even if you had fallen on some hard times I cant see were things got that bad unless your living beyond your means..I think some of the stuff going on with them is mostly your own doing at this point the girl opening up that can of worms just helped it along.. This isn't their College Buddy. He is in essence THEIR landlord. What he chooses to charge them and when and how he turns over rent is his business so long as they have a roof over their heads and utilities. The end. I am floored that anyone thinks its their business just how much their landlord is pulling in etc. Don't like the rental agreement? Don't rent there! I have subletted for years. If someone pulled that crap with MY LANDLORD, I'd give them their walking papers the next day.
Author ktya
Dreamingoftigers , Absolutely. The arrangement works for my landlord as well as for me and my tenants. He gets a long term tenant who is locked in at a lower rate but who maintains the house and keeps things stable (save for my spill this year), I get a subsidized rent by renting to tenants at a fair market rate, and my tenants get to rent a room in a house where everything from dishes to towels to furniture is provided. My landlord is spared from the search for tenants and by and large has little to worry about. This is not a few roommates who signed a lease together.

When I had tenants they got a great deal in the rent as well. Furnished rooms etc. Some meals (if they so wanted) and for less than the average price of renting a room in my area. My last tenant got the whole top floor with furnished living room and two bedrooms to herself for $450 a month (unheard of for the price of a ROOM here). I'd invite anyone who has a rental complaint to go rent form my mother-in-law. Ugh. She won't even let people use her washer and she charged a guy an extra $30/mnth to use a space heater. And she goes in the rooms and cleans them once a week. With or without permission. Her tenants never stay long.
dreamingoftigers
Sorry for victim-blaming you earlier etc. I know that you felt you had some social proof with her etc. One of my friends was a total user, if not outright con. I did some things in the "gray area" when I was younger. Good people tend to trust first and consider second. At this point i rule out nothing and beleive nothing that she said. I did some things in the "gray area" when I was younger. Good people tend to trust first and consider second. Yeah, it's ok its the Internet. You never know who your talking to on the other side. The victim blaming that made my blood boil was my two tenants shouting at me, calling me a liar, and saying that this was all my fault because they still believed her story. Earlier that day I had a chat with my male tenant about what was going on with the rent and told him the truth and in seconds I was being called a liar by the other tenant who was at work so he obviously texted her. Then when the two of them got home they double teamed me. I took the day off work because the stress of everything was killing me that day - and only got called a liar for most of the day. I think that they are feeling a bit off base now seeing as the scammer ex told them the sun and the moon about how she considered them like family and she was just worried for them - and now ones out $50 and the other is out jewelry and she's probably blocked them both off bbm. This week it's been so hard to go to work. Making sales calls when your jaw is in your lap - not easy. I hope this is the end of new surprises and that all I have to do is clean up the mess
FitChick
I hope this is the end of new surprises and that all I have to do is clean up the mess You'll have more surprises until you change the locks and get four keys made: one for your landlord, one for each tenant and one for you. Then if something else goes missing or the place is trashed, you know who to blame. This chick might tell a sob story to her next victim who will get revenge on you.

My point was hes wasn't passing the rent along to cover the roof over their heads. so they were paying on their end but the rent wasent being met at some point they were/are all going to get evicted I guess subletting has its risks lesson learned its always best to hand your rent to the actual land/home owner.. beach
I agree with reporting her username to the dating site. They need to know when someone is using their site to scam people. It could help reduce her way of finding more victims. It's always helpful to report the people that aren't there for true reasons. Exposing her as publicly as possible might help others not to be taken for a ride.
Author ktya
Ugh when will it end. So i checked my bank account ... And she managed to wangle a second night at the hotel. I specifically signed a form for one night and they allowed her to process a second. Talked to the hotel staff who processed it who will talk to management to get it reversed. Submitted it all to the police. Called the bank anti fraud dept and filed it, cancelled the card. When will it end.

sillyanswer
How is that even possible you would have had to sign the slip to authroise the second night no? It'll either be because signing that slip included agreeing to some clause allowing them to take any other money they felt was due to them (which may or may not be legally enforceable) or just common practice in the hotel industry where people extend their stay and, typically, it doesn't turn out to be fraudulent or unauthorised.

Thats sort of crazy ive stayed in my share of hotels and was never charged unless I sighed in person a second time. Something doesn't sound right the hotel will have to reverse the charges ide imagine..there's no way that could stick..
